Christianity Today 'No Longer Speaks for Evangelicals' After Impeachment Op-Ed
PJ Media ^ | 12/20/2019 | Tyler O' Neill

Posted on 12/20/2019 2:04:25 PM PST by SeekAndFind

On Thursday, Christianity Today's Editor-in-Chief Mark Galli called for the removal of President Donald Trump in the impeachment process. He cited the late renowned evangelist Billy Graham, the magazine's founder. Many evangelical leaders, notably including Billy Graham's son Franklin, condemned the op-ed and insisted that Christianity Today no longer speaks for evangelicals.

"In our founding documents, Billy Graham explains that Christianity Today will help evangelical Christians interpret the news in a manner that reflects their faith. The impeachment of Donald Trump is a significant event in the story of our republic. It requires comment," Galli wrote. He again referenced Graham, saying that the founder encouraged Christianity Today to "make our own opinions on political matters clear ... with both conviction and love." He insisted that the magazine's staff do "love and pray for our president."

Yet Galli went on to demand Trump's removal from office — either through the impeachment process or by the voters in 2020. He insisted that "the facts in this instance are unambiguous: The president of the United States attempted to use his political power to coerce a foreign leader to harass and discredit one of the president’s political opponents. That is not only a violation of the Constitution; more importantly, it is profoundly immoral."

This framing is extremely debatable, and even if it is true, Trump's action arguably does not rise to the level of high crimes and misdemeanors — since an investigation into Joe Biden's dealings with Ukraine (from which his son Hunter profited handsomely) is arguably in America's interest.

I take exception to this particular statement the author, Galli, made in his Christianity Today op-ed:

“But the facts in this instance are unambiguous: The president of the United States attempted to use his political power to coerce a foreign leader to harass and discredit one of the president’s political opponents. That is not only a violation of the Constitution; more importantly, it is profoundly immoral.”

__________________________

THE AUTHOR IS EITHER IGNORANT OF THE FACTS, OR DELIBERATELY TWISTING THE FACTS.

1) Joe Biden used his position as VP to enrich his incompetent son while the energy company that hired his son was corruptly trying to influence Washington DC. How did he do it? Biden threatened to withhold $1 Billion in aid to Ukraine if they did not fire the prosecutor who was investigating the company that his son was associated with.

Biden, the then VP even BOASTED on TV that he successfully got the prosecutor fired through his threat.

2) Trump did NOT COERCE the Ukrainian President to investigate this corruption to benefit himself. He asked the Ukrainian President for a favor, not for himself, but for “us” ( his words, read the transcript ), which means, The United States, to investigate the above corrupt deal.

This is his job as chief law enforcement office of the United States. That the one being investigated happens to be running for President is beside the point. The question is this — WAS THERE EVIDENCE OF CORRUPTION? ABSOLUTELY.

3) The said foreign leader himself, Zelensky OPENLY STATED that He DID NOT FEEL ANY PRESSURE OR COERCION from Trump. How could Mr. Galli say the opposite? He isn’t the alleged victim of coercion.

4) If we ignore this corruption and let it slide without an investigation ( yes, an investigation, not a pre-determined conclusion to decide a person’s guilt or innocence ), we simply EMBOLDEN other government officials to do the same thing in the future.

So, Mr. Galli, in light of the above facts, how could you say that Trump violated the constitution? On the contrary, it would be IMMORAL to simply let the former second highest official in the land get away without investigating his corrupt dealings.

In other words Mr. Galli, you either don’t know the facts, or know the facts but deliberately twist it.

The Bible tells us this:

“Do not judge by appearances, but judge with right judgment.” ( John 7:24 ).

By failing to meet that Biblical standard, Mr. Galli CANNOT and DOES NOT speak for Evangelicals, only himself.

You cannot interpret President Trump’s actions without first listening to Joke Biden’s “son of a bitch” interview at the Council on Foreign Relations...

Really makes no sense. Do they think a bunch of progressive dems will subscribe now? Do they think they will pick up advertisers? It’s like suicide, they will have significant numbers of cancellations. Maybe 40%? They had to see that coming.

What's the left's involvement in this controversy?

Answer: The religious left and the political left are merged. Social justice and social gospel now speak the same language.

“Did you think Christianity Today was leftist before this editorial? “

Speaking for myself, I let my subscription end NLT 1990. CT has been off the rails for a long time.

Galli takes a cheap shot in the last issue before he retires. As a liberal nut job he had to swallow his disdain for evangelicals during his brief stint as Editor in Chief on CT. He’ll be gone when CT magazine, which is the sinking “flagship” publication of a declining not for profit enterprise, circles the drain and brings down the entire ministry.

By then he’ll be arm weary from slapping himself on the back for his “principled stand” of speaking truth to power.

Galli will be blamed for the drastic and sudden demise of this crumbling ministry (despite its downward slide for more than a decade.) While Galli may have penned this ill advised editorial there is no way this was published without the full blessing of CT senior management. They’ve got no one to blame but themselves.

Buh bye, CT.

Very good points but the other elephant in the room is the fact that the conversation that is presented by the Democrats to supposedly implicate President Trump was between speakers of totally different languages. A word-for-word translation is impossible. Any version of what was said should have a strong dose of conjecture and a measure of goodwill.

This whole Democrat impeachment episode is concrete evidence of Alexander Pope's line; "For fools rush in where angels fear to tread."

Someone needs to remind Christianity Today lying and bearing false witness are still sins. Real Christians stand with the truth even when it challenges their political indoctrination. Here is the truth

https://www.realclearpolitics.com/video/2019/09/27/flashback_2018_joe_biden_brags_at_cfr_meeting_about_withholding_aid_to_ukraine_to_force_firing_of_prosecutor.html

FLASHBACK, 2018: Joe Biden Brags At CFR Meeting About Withholding Aid To Ukraine To Force Firing Of Prosecutor

Just because Biden is now a political opponent does not make him immune from investigation for possible wrong doing while VP. The Democrat party has reckless lied to the US People during this whole impeachment scam. The President has both a legal and a moral obligation to have this investigated. Their “Abuse of power” accusation is an absurd lie with not a hint of shred of a clue of either legal, or moral, legitimacy.
