The Trump administration proposed new regulations Wednesday that would deny asylum protections to immigrants with criminal convictions — including some low-level offenses and misdemeanors — measures that would raise new legal barriers to those seeking refuge in the United States.

The proposed change from the Justice Department and the Department of Homeland Security would disqualify asylum applicants found guilty of serious offenses such as driving while intoxicated and domestic battery, as well as lesser violations such as the use of false documents and reentering the United States illegally.

The Trump administration has made multiple moves in recent months to make it significantly more difficult for immigrants to qualify for humanitarian protection in the United States, measures the government says are necessary to cope with a record influx of Central American children and families who have overwhelmed U.S. courts with flimsy or false claims.

If implemented after a public comment period, the new regulation would help the government sort through an immigration court backlog that exceeds 1 million pending cases, according to the Justice Department.

Never let a crisis (impeachment) go to waste - this new rule could SIGNIFICANTLY do away with the backlog of asylum cases

You can lose your asylum because of a DUI so, this is fine by me.

Be a good citizen...

When was it and why was it made allowable for an asylum seeker to be allowed in this country after any offense? DUI? Out!

We were not always insane. Who allowed this?

Entering the country illegally is at least a low-level offense.

Deport them all!

lesser crime, not murder or such but like coming here illegally? great - they all get tossed back to wherever they came from. even the ones here decades that procreated and there kids (adult now or whatever age) can go with them. One illegal act created the whole line of illegal events.

Trump proposal would deny asylum to immigrants convicted of low-level crimes

That's a feature, not a bug.

Clearly, the BEST way to prevent illegal ‘immigration’, is to have a law stating that anyone caught entering the US illegally shall NEVER be given permanent residency authority of any kind..
