Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell struck back Tuesday at his Democratic counterpart's calls for an in-depth impeachment trial featuring multiple new witnesses, dismissing the push as a "fishing expedition" that would set a "nightmarish precedent."
"The Senate is meant to act as judge and jury, to hear a trial, not to re-run the entire fact-finding investigation because angry partisans rushed sloppily through it,” he said on the Senate floor.
In a Sunday letter, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer had called for the chamber to subpoena new documents and call witnesses who had been blocked by the White House during the impeachment inquiry on the House side.
McConnell, R-Ky., claimed that such investigative steps, though, were part of the House role -- not a mission for the Senate. He warned that entertaining Schumer’s proposal to do House lawmakers’ “homework” could invite a string of future “dubious” and “frivolous” impeachment inquiries.
He stressed the fact-finding mission should have been completed during the impeachment inquiry led by House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif. McConnell accused the House of doing a rush job, and said Schumer is now looking "to make Chairman Schiff's sloppy work more persuasive."

Succinct and to-the-point.

Ideally, yes. That would be fair.
But there is already a conflict regarding what constitutes “being given a chance to present”.
House Democrats requested several White House witnesses who declined to appear before the House Committee hearings. Schumer’s position is that the Democrats should have a chance to present these witnesses in the Senate, to restore fairness.
McConnell is saying that the proper way to settle the question of whether these witnesses should be required to appear, was to appeal to the courts, which the House Democrats did not do. Therefore, according to McConnell, and presumably the White House, the Democrats already had their chance at due process with these witnesses, and the Senate is not obligated to give them another bite at the apple.
Actually, the conflict is even deeper than that. The reason the Democrats declined to follow due process and appeal to the courts is because doing so would have totally undercut their “obstruction of congress”’ claim.
After all, if the courts had upheld the White House’s right to refuse cooperation, there would have been no obstruction case because the courts deemed it valid. If the courts had struck it down, and forced them to testify - then by testifying, the obstruction claim would have been mitigated - either way, no obstruction! So the Democrats couldn’t appeal to the courts without destroying their own argument.
Basically, the Democrats have put themselves in queen’s check, and McConnell is not letting them take back their move.

The Senate shouldn’t even take it up. Ignore it. What are the Dems gonna do? stamp their feet?
McConnell should throw a press conference..with a big trashcan present to throw the “articles” of impeachment into it
