Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell struck back Tuesday at his Democratic counterpart's calls for an in-depth impeachment trial featuring multiple new witnesses, dismissing the push as a "fishing expedition" that would set a "nightmarish precedent."
"The Senate is meant to act as judge and jury, to hear a trial, not to re-run the entire fact-finding investigation because angry partisans rushed sloppily through it,” he said on the Senate floor.
In a Sunday letter, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer had called for the chamber to subpoena new documents and call witnesses who had been blocked by the White House during the impeachment inquiry on the House side.
McConnell, R-Ky., claimed that such investigative steps, though, were part of the House role -- not a mission for the Senate. He warned that entertaining Schumer’s proposal to do House lawmakers’ “homework” could invite a string of future “dubious” and “frivolous” impeachment inquiries.
He stressed the fact-finding mission should have been completed during the impeachment inquiry led by House Intelligence Committee Chairman Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif. McConnell accused the House of doing a rush job, and said Schumer is now looking "to make Chairman Schiff's sloppy work more persuasive."

The democrats moving forward instead of waiting for SCOTUS to rule on the four WH persons they subpoenaed will now nullify any demands for new witnesses. Just as McConnell says.

The 3 branches of Government are “co-equal”, Congress does ‘NOT’ have unchecked power against the Executive branch compelling the branch to comply with subpoenas or be impeached w/obstruction. Just as the Executive branch can’t force the Legislative branch to comply with requests... That’s what the “separation of powers” is all about.. Civics 101
Dems just don’t want to go to the courts, they have admitted as such, they are in a rush because of 2020 and opposition to impeachment is rising...But to put forth an obstruction article because they don’t want to go to court is an abuse of Congressional power.

I think that there’s less chance for PR damage by a quick verdict rather than a drawn out one...there’s too big a chance of an unpleasant,potentially damaging,surprise in letting the Rats call a dozen “witnesses”.”
totally correct ... and pretty much what all of the smart lawyer and lawyer-types are saying ... the GOP Senate should establish impeachment trial rules should that state the “trial” will be based totally on the record provided by the House, because anything else, e.g., opening the door for even a single witness, pretty much opens the door for an unlimited number of witnesses and an endless show trial that gives the dying lying leftist Democrat fake stream enemedia an endless excuse to broadcast nothing but impeachment, impeachment, impeachment for months and months ...
far better to get the foregone conclusion of “not guilty” over with in a couple of days, and then take the offense, with hearings about Guilani’s ukraine findings, hearings on the IG report, etc.

On the obstruction “charge” they came up with, if they really wanted those documents or testimony or ever they were looking for they should have spent the time and Took it to the courts to decide, but They decide to rush it and now they’re in this position
