Lawrence Sigmond Bittaker, 79, was pronounced dead at San Quentin State Prison around 4 p.m. Friday, according to a statement from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. The Marin County coroner will determine the exact cause of death.

Bittaker and his crime partner, 71-year-old Roy Lewis Norris – known together as the “Tool Box Killers” – kidnapped, raped, tortured and killed five teens over a five-month period in 1979.

The two were convicted in the brutal deaths of Lucinda Lynn Schaefer, 16; Andrea Joy Hall, 18; Jacqueline Doris Gilliam, 15; Jacqueline Leah Lamp, 13; and Shirley Lynette Ledford, 16.

Investigators never located the bodies of Schaefer and Hall.

This guy and his partner audio taped the rape/torture sessions they had with these poor young girls. As part of their training for new agents, the FBI has used these tapes before. I remember reading about this sad fact and that when these tapes were played at the trial, there was not a dry eye in the court house. Afterward, I wish I had never red about this. This guy was at the very top of the scale of evil.

“Pretty sure one of the young victims begged to be killed during the torture, in order to put an end to it.”

A friend of mine was the investigator that solved the crime. There was a tape recording of the torture. My friend never got over it. My friend can now truly rest in peace.

Yes, Bittaker lived twice as long as his victims after he was convicted of multiple capital murder.

Their rampaging was quite a big story in Socal during the late 1970’s. RIP to their victims and may he rot.

“Getting a life sentence in California is the best thing, these animals ever got/get in their rotten life.”

Not only California. Check out the story of James Robertson, a habitual prisoner in Florida, who as an inmate for robbery and assault was so violent he spent mass amounts of time in solitary, which he didn’t like. So as soon as he was transferred to a cell with another prisoner, Robertson strangled him with socks.

Robertson was given the death penalty (after demanding it), and is now spending his time happily on death row.

“Roy Norris was sentenced to 45 years to life imprisonment, with eligibility for parole from 2010.”

WTF?.....Where is he now?

They must have a pretty cushy death row.

He should have been given the same treatment as his victims.

One never thinks of the rippling ramifications of such horror. I didn’t hear the tapes, but just reading about them many years ago made me remember these unspeakable murders. Heinousness on the level of Jesse Dirkhising. I think it’s shocking and unimaginable to most people that crimes like this occur. And it’s also shocking and unimaginable that the perpetrators get off with a virtual slap on the wrists.

So very sorry for your friend and others affected by these horrible, evil events.

I have read somewhere that Norris is eligible again this year for parole, but I can’t imagine it will be granted. This is one of the worst murder cases in California history. The public outrage I think would be intense.

You can't hardly execute anyone in California. pliers Bittiaker (so named for his favorite torture implement) enjoyed a long life after his capture. The same can't be said for his victims.

Since Soros admitted to colluding with the NAZIs, he should have his citizenship revoked and sent back to Hungary.

The other guy got 45 years and is already eligible for parole. He’ll be released by 2025.
