Greta Thunberg apologized Saturday after saying that politicians should be put "against the wall after some critics alleged that the teen climate activist was advocating for violence against officials.
Yesterday I said we must hold our leaders accountable and unfortunately said put them against the wall. Thats Swenglish: att ställa någon mot väggen (to put someone against the wall) means to hold someone accountable, Thunberg tweeted.
Thats what happens when you improvise speeches in a second language. But of course I apologise if anyone misunderstood this. I can not enough express the fact that I - as well as the entire school strike movement- are against any possible form of violence. It goes without saying but I say it anyway, she continued.
Thunberg joined thousands of students in the Italian city of Turin Friday for a protest to push the countrys government to take greater action to curb carbon emissions. She traveled to the city from Madrid after attending a United Nations climate summit in Spain.
Thunberg told the crowd in Turin that world leaders are running away from their responsibilities to address carbon emissions and fight climate change, the Associated Press reported.
We have to make sure that they cannot do that," she said. "We will make sure they, that we put them against the wall, and that they will have to do their job and to protect our futures."
In Swedish, the phrase putting someone against the wall means someone is forced to address difficult questions of a difficult situation.

Even in English there’s a versions of this — “my back was against the wall” which doesn’t imply a firing squad. Her explanation is plausible and if you read the whole quote it’s pretty clear she’s not saying they should be shot.
The left constantly interprets our guys dishonestly to score cheap points and I totally get wanting to fight fire with fire. But in this case she’s right and I’m not going to play that game.
Thats what came to mind when I first read it.
How did this Swedish demon travel from Madrid to Turin?
By train, or did she borrow Hillary’s broomstick?
she just took a crap in the blue cupboard

You know, I think this smug little Leftist punk wouldnt mind stomping a few throats.
too late- her hateful little heart has been exposed- the ONLY reason she is apologizing is because of the negative blowback- it’s a typical liberal FALSE APOLOGY!
Not accepted Scoldilocks!
You made your point, Greta! Now go home and get a proper education!

BS! Liar!
Did someone pull the wrong strings on the marionette?
Do not dare to criticize Greta. She is a child! For shame! /s
Wannabe Nazi scum.
Promulgators of #FakeScience should but put up against the wall.
I won’t be apologizing or taking that back.
"This is not who I am."
Considering the history of Europe, it’s hard to believe that putting people against a wall means anything other than executing them with bullets.
We know what the expression means, Greta. That’s why we are well armed and keeping our powder dry.
She accidently let the cat out of the bag. She blurted out the truth.
