Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said Thursday that party leaders will apply no pressure on rank-and-file members to support the articles of impeachment against President Trump that are expected to hit the House floor next week.
While the Democratic Caucus is overwhelmingly supportive of the impeachment effort, several moderate Democrats are holding out ahead of the votes amid concerns that backing the effort might alienate voters in their battleground districts heading into the 2020 election.
Pelosi maintained on Thursday that the choice is entirely theirs to make.
"I have no message to them. We are not whipping this legislation, nor would we ever with something like this," Pelosi told reporters in the Capitol. "They'll make their own decisions. I don't say anything to them."
The Democratic leader's remarks came as lawmakers on the House Judiciary Committee on Thursday held a hearing to debate two articles of impeachment against Trump over his dealings with Ukraine: abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.
Democrats had said after unveiling the articles earlier this week that they don't expect more than a couple defections, but the spotlight has shifted to centrist Democrats who are hearing from constituents on both sides of the issue.

They are in a tough spot. If they vote for impeachment, they hurt their chances of reelection. If they vote against, then they betray their fellow Democrats, and will be ostracized.

Not really. The old hag Nan isn’t the sharpest tool in the shed, but she is an adept political animal. If she wants to maintain a majority, and possibly remain Speaker, she has to give those “moderates” wiggle room to do whatever will keep them in office.

Not if their vote is unnecessary and it would put them in danger of losing reelection in their district. They will only be required to fall on their sword if they need the votes. If they do they will get a cushy job afterwards anyway, so a win all around. There. That’s what she meant to say.

Pelosi can dole out some NAY votes to try to keep them from losing their districts next fall, but most weren’t going to survive Trump being on the ballot anyway... and every last one of these bastards rubber stamped the vote to move this crap forward!!! Voting down the actual articles WON’T SAVE THEM!

The Democrat party has refused to accept the outcome of a fair and free election, and refused to peacefully transfer power... It has engaged in TREASON and SEDITION... and while few if any, will actually call them out publicly on this, the people know this...
