A good friend of my grandfather's - Fred Lanoue of Georgia Tech - developed the "Drownproofing" course.

To graduate, you were tied hand and foot and dumped into the pool. You had to swim to the other end and then stay afloat for 10 minutes.

Every Georgia Tech student used to have to take this course to graduate. Not sure if political correctness has triumphed, but I don't think they do that any more.

My mother took the course from Fred himself.
