Every year, Catholics around the world donate tens of millions of dollars to the pope. Bishops exhort the faithful to support the weak and suffering through the pope’s main charitable appeal, called Peter’s Pence.
What the church doesn’t advertise is that most of that collection, worth more than more than €50 million ($55 million) annually, goes toward plugging the hole in the Vatican’s own administrative budget, while as little as 10% is spent on charitable works, according to people familiar with the funds.
The little-publicized breakdown of how the Holy See spends Peter’s Pence, known only among senior Vatican officials, is raising concern among some Catholic Church leaders that the faithful are being misled about the use of their donations, which could further hurt the credibility of the Vatican’s financial management under Pope Francis.
The Vatican is currently embroiled in a scandal over opaque real-estate investments in London, which has triggered a power struggle within the Vatican’s bureaucracy and led to the dismissal of its chief financial regulator. Last month, the Vatican was suspended from an international network of anti-money-laundering watchdogs.

A question, please. Does the Vatican get a cut of every donation to a Catholic charity? For example, if I donate to the St. Vincent de Paul Society, does the Vatican automatically get a piece of my donation?
The pope is a money grubbing whore. Who knew?
Indeed, a few years ago our church had announced it time for the Peter’s Pence collection drive. The next week there were 2 stories on the church paying out millions for sex abuse. I have not given one thin dime since. Did help out some friends in need and a local non profit for doctors doing free clinic work.

As a Catholic I quit giving them ANY money once the latest outbreak of priestly pedophilia cases hit the fan. I knew my money would be going to pay for high-priced defense attorneys and spinmeister PR firms.
This is the real story in the Catholic Church.
They are running out of $$$$.

The Vatican has some serious PR issues right now, and warranted for good reasons.

I’m thinking this whole operation has gone out of favor with the Lord. But what do I know? I’ve never even been to confessional.
Peter’s Pence has ALWAYS been described at any mass I’ve ever been at to fund the administration of the Vatican.
In regard specifically to SVDP in my experience almost 100% given to your local chapter stays in the community.

We cut out all charities and decided to give to a lady in the nursing home who didn’t have anyone. Before we got out of her room, the attendants were stealing the stuff.
Never again.
I believe in secular terms this is called THEFT. Shame on them.
PS. I wonder if this is the kind of crap the Holy See did not want Cardinal Pell to expose.
