How did South Bend actually do under Mayor Pete Buttigieg? We pulled the numbers to find out.

Mayor Pete Buttigieg is running for the Democratic nomination as an unconventional candidate — a mayor running a city with a population of just over 100,000 residents. Butting up against (but not, in fact, containing) the University of Notre Dame, South Bend is a moderately-sized town confronting many of the economic challenges that beguile the post-industrial Midwest with the advantage of being next to a large research university.

To find out how South Bend fared during Mayor Pete's time in office, Insider pulled a number of key stats from the American Community Survey from 2012, the year he took office, to 2017, the latest year for which we have data.

The best thing about Indiana is New Paris and the Smokercraft boat factory. The best aluminum boats in the world.

The Studebaker Hawk of the sixties was very much the same car as the 1953 Starliner(which was far and away ahead of the time) and President with some new sheet metal. When you get to the GranTurismo Hawks that roof line that you think lead to the Mustangs was in fact lifted from the Thunderbird. Lacking money to do retools and redesign in it's final decades, which is why they hoodwinked Packard into buying them, they for the most part successfully updated their old sheet metal.

Studebaker remained an important innovator into the early sixties notably with the Avanti which was the fastest production car in the world when it debuted, And the Gt Hawks with their long hoods and stylish interior and exterior, not to mention kick-ass performance when powered by an Avanti drive-train.

I was born and raised in SB. Left to go to college in Michigan and never returned but I have several friends that still live there.

In 1975 when I left, SB was a really nice mid size/large Indiana town. A lot of industry, good schools, reasonably low poverty and crime rate.

It is now a sewer. All the major industry is gone, a poverty rate of 25%+, twice the average violent crime rate and has lost 25% of it’s population over the last 5 decades.

BTW, the last year a Republican served as mayor was Lloyd Allen (great man) in 1972.

Smokercraft/StarCraft are still the best.

I bought a Lund last year, biggest mistake I ever made.

Nothing about the high crime rate? BI is a leftist news source. You can take that to the bank.

The best thing about Indiana, aside from its verdant hillsides and fertile bottom lands, is its folks.

Yeah, I like the people there too. I’m not far from the OH/IN/MI state line.

The states come together just 30 mi south of me.
