Mayor Pete Buttigieg is running for the Democratic nomination as an unconventional candidate — a mayor running a city with a population of just over 100,000 residents. Butting up against (but not, in fact, containing) the University of Notre Dame, South Bend is a moderately-sized town confronting many of the economic challenges that beguile the post-industrial Midwest with the advantage of being next to a large research university.

To find out how South Bend fared during Mayor Pete's time in office, Insider pulled a number of key stats from the American Community Survey from 2012, the year he took office, to 2017, the latest year for which we have data.

I’ve visited South Bend once. Early ‘70s. Stopped by Barney’s Cannons to see his shop. He kept a Model T part of some sort on his lathe as it supposedly made the lathe run better. Good times.

Part of the old Studebaker plant was used to produce Humvees for the Army. I remember going through town and seeing a dozen or so enroute to somewhere.

The Studebaker Hawk of the early 60s was ahead of its time. It featured the long hood, short rear deck and an overall sporty appearance that would later become popular in the Mustang, Camaro, etc.

I had a business in Mishawaka which butts up against the border of South Bend and was down there quite a bit. South Bend was a hole. The contrast between Mishawaka and South Bend was stark. Mishawaka thriving due to a long term Republican mayor. South Bend was dying due...it’s a democrat stranglehold city. The ONLY thing that keeps South Bend viable is Notre Dame.

South Bend has been screwed up for a long time. There was a gentleman who bought up a couple of the Studebaker factory buildings and all the NOS and used parts they held when the company went under. It was a treasure trove and important resource for Studebaker owners and collectors.

But the leadership of the city just couldn't stand the owner and his old buildings standing in the way of their plans to remake the area. The city harassed him with constant inspections and code violations for codes that didn't exist when the Studebaker existed and of course would never have been cited for because Studebaker was the bread and butter of the city.

It got so bad with the fines and demands for upgrades that the poor guy couldn't deal with it any more and was forced to shut down and sell off what he could. A lot of parts ended up being sold for scrap because it was impossible to save it all, though one man did pull many semi loads out before the end.

So yeah screw South Bend.
