Global warming may be making women give birth earlier and endangering newborn babies, according to research.
Scientists studying births and weather in the US found on days when temperatures were higher than 90°F (32°C), birth rates rose by five per cent.
Many children were born days before their due dates but some were delivered two weeks earlier than expected.
Researchers believe heat can cause hormonal changes in pregnant women, which then bring on labour sooner.
The problem is likely to become worse as climate change means heatwaves become more common over the coming decades, the researchers said.
Heatwaves are expected to become more frequent as record levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere trap the sun's heat on the Earth and raise global temperatures.
'At least 25,000 births per year experience some reduction in gestational length in the US over our sample period,' the team, led by Professor Alan Barreca, wrote.
They found, on average, pregnancies were cut short by six days but some babies were born as much as two weeks early.
And their study period ended 30 years ago, suggesting the effects could be even greater by now than what was predicted.

What a crock !!!
So, what’s the average gestation in the tropics?
They are having abortions. Heat doesn’t affect them.
And their study period ended 30 years ago, suggesting the effects could be even greater by now than what was predicted
Gonna need more air conditioning.
Why? Were all gonna die in 11 years. Who cares?
If ‘heat’ makes babies come sooner, it must have been happening every Summer since forever; and there’s probably a good, natural reason for it.
(Or does biology discriminate between heat caused from normal weather, and from ‘man made weather’?)
A lot of women have been living in Africa for a long time and it's quite hot in the equatorial regions. Why study changes in gestation in the U.S.? Why not compare Africa to more temperate areas? There's lots of data that can be used to test this theory.
So, in tropical countries, is normal term 8 1/2 months, as opposed to 9 months in temperate countries?
I don’t think so.
All these years, I thought there were more people in the tropics because it’s easier to live in a place that doesn’t get snow.
Is that why women in equatorial Africa have always suffered a much higher incidence of premature births than, say, the Sami (ethnic Finns) in northern Scandinavia?
Oh, they don't, you say?
Regards,
And that’s a problem just why?
Those men have NEVER been pregnant.
By that far along, you are BEGGING the baby to make an early appearance.
Dont forget- they will also be more likely to get pregnant in the first place.
Skimpier clothing!
Honestly, this is such BS it is not worthy of comment.
Oh really? My daughter was born in September, two weeks late, and even then my wife had to be induced. The attempt to induce at one week late didn’t work.
I’ve given birth in Florida once in July and once in August. Late August. With both by June I was seriously considering castor oil and a pogo stick rather than face that wet electric blanket heat. So I can tell you if hot humid weather triggered earlier labor I’d sure as heck would have known it.
Oh and babies also weigh more on average at birth now than say decades ago. So maybe nature just figures the baby is now fully developed and ready for that bottom slap.
However, global warming will reduce the number of snow shoe accidents.
