Frankly, you can log onto youtube and attend video classes taught at schools like Stanford and MIT and get a first class education for free

I see a lot of people pushing trades in this forum. But the trades are not as in demand as you think and not jobs that just anyone can do. It’s physical labor that is many times outdoors. That’s rough in some climates like Florida, Arizona, or Texas where temperatures can get very high. My uncle was an electrician for a number of years. He quit at age 42 with serious back issues. He had to go back to school and get a degree anyway in order to do something else.

Trades are also very sensitive to the economy. During the last recession, construction plummeted. A lot of tradesman got laid off...many in their older ages. And without a college degree, they ended up unemployed for a long time.

Im not saying the trades are bad jobs. But they are not the best option for everyone.

The jobs in most demand is in healthcare and IT. And yes you’ll need college degrees to even get in the door for those jobs.

I agree. Free education is almost here.

The only thing missing is a system for certifying the knowledge mastered.

Even in fields such as engineering and medicine much of the material is rote and changes little from year to year. Obviously, laboratory and clinical rotations need a brick and mortar setting but none of the rest. The cost to the student could be greatly reduced.

I agree. ...but....the cost to the student could be greatly reduced. Obviously, brick and mortar settings are essential for laboratory and clinical rotations.

However...most of the knowledge they must acquire is rote and changes little from year to year and is well suited to internet learning and used textbooks.

could NOT have gotten 2 of my most important jobs without a college degree.

That's only because your employers required one. How many people do you suppose were turned down who had the same experience as you, maybe even more, but they didn't have the diploma?

A degree doesn't guarantee intelligence or performance....A degree doesn't teach you common sense, a degree doesn't endow you with leadership skills, a degree doesn't teach you how to deal with people.

I worked 35 years in HR for a Tier 1 manufacturing company in Detroit but was never promoted to supervision due to lack of a degree even tho my counterpart at our Phila. plant was a supervisor, my predecessor was supervision and the individual with a degree who I trained for my job prior to the plant closing was promoted to supervision........

The job was specific to the plant and the responsibilities involved nothing that is taught in college........

Syracuse University’s Vincent Tinto, an expert on student attrition, reported in 1993 that colleges with an average SAT score of 1100 or higher have a first-year attrition rate of 8%. For colleges with an average SAT score of 700 or below, the first-year attrition rate is 45.5%.

In other words, this is a problem that solves itself: if someone is let into a college they don't deserve to be in, don't worry... they'll be weeded out again pretty quickly.

It is also not for sour grapes amateur pundits that eschew formal education because they are lacking themselves

I didn’t make the rues bro and I wont say whether you’re wrong or right.

But the jobs were mentally and academically challenging and at least at the time, going to college did mean you were able to get good grades in what were supposed to be difficult courses

So all things being equal, I’d go with the person that has proven he can handle difficult material.

That’s not an insult to non college degree guys.

But if i was a manager and two people were equal in all ways except that, NO DOUBT for an investment bank position ANYWHERE in the company, besides janitor and security guard, I would want a college degree

ciao

Free-college experiment (in Tennessee) proves it isn’t the magic bullet Democrats promise
