Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg apologized Friday after calling fellow 2020 Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) “well spoken," a phrase which critics have said has racist undertones.
While discussing his 2020 competitors with CBS’s Gayle King in an interview that aired Friday morning, Bloomberg said, “Cory Booker endorsed me a number of times, and I endorsed Cory Booker a number of times. He’s very well spoken, he’s got some good ideas.”
Bloomberg added that in regards to the candidate pool, “it would be better the more diverse any group is, but the public is out there picking and choosing and narrowing down this field.”
Many criticized Bloomberg’s remark towards Booker as a racist slight commenting on the candidate’s intelligence.
Booker said he was “taken aback” by Bloomberg’s comment.
“It’s sort of stunning at times that we are still revisiting these sort of tired tropes or the language we have out there that I don’t think folks understand,” Booker said in a radio interview that he shared on Twitter. “The fact that they don’t understand is problematic.”

It wasn’t long ago that Bloomberg was criticizing both Biden and Beto for going on “apology tours.” Now it appears he’s trying hard to out-apologize both of them.

the new joke in our household is that no matter who it is, if we see a pundit or spokesperson say something intelligently and articulately, we say: “You know what?” No, what?” “He’s well spoken.” ...
I don’t care if Bloomberg catches flack over anything, but can’t “ well-spoken” be accepted as a generic compliment without having lurking behind it the implication that “this is outstanding because so many blacks aren’t well-spoken”? It’s kind of a shame that people have to walk on eggs when giving an innocent compliment.
We have arrived. Idiocracy is the norm.
I would not vote for someone with so little backbone that they would apologize for a compliment that had no racist undertones.

Booker is not well spoken.
Doubtful. They probably criticized it as a comment on the intelligence or demeanor of other African-Americans.

Booker comes across like some kind of big, emotional baby.

Mom and I were simpatico. When she was very old and in assisted living I would spend every Saturday with her watching these movies on TCM. When she was not watching TV she would listen to OTR on her satellite Sirius XM radio.
What would she listen to? Old Time Radio. What a wealth of OTR has been preserved. At the end of her life she went blind but OTR sustained her.
