In a report published on Thursday, it was reported that while on a recent visit to Buddhists in Thailand, Pope Francis addressed the issue of refugees, comparing the policy of building walls and detention centers to the acts of King Herod who killed Jesus.
La Civilta Cattolica reported on Thursday that while in Thailand, Pope Francis met a group of 48 Jesuits from Southeast Asia. Pope Francis is unique in several respects; he is the first pope from the southern hemisphere and, most significantly, he is the first Jesuit to be appointed to the position. The pope discussed the issue of refugees and immigrants with his fellow Jesuits.
For the Jesuits our work with refugees has become a real theological place. Thats how I see it, a theological place. Pedro Arrupe right here in Thailand in his last speech reaffirmed the importance of this mission. Arrupe was a prophet to me: his swan song was the foundation, right here in Bangkok, of the Jesuit Refugee Service. Then, during the flight to Rome from Thailand, he suffered a stroke.
The phenomenon of refugees has always existed, but today it is better known because of social differences, hunger, political tensions and especially war. For these reasons, migratory movements are intensifying. What is the answer the world gives? The policy of waste. Refugees are waste material. The Mediterranean has been turned into a cemetery. The notorious cruelty of some detention centers in Libya touches my heart. Here in Asia, we all know the problem of the Rohingya. I must admit that I am shocked by some of the narratives I hear in Europe about borders. Populism is gaining strength.
In other parts, there are walls that even separate children from parents, Pope Francis said in an oblique reference to President Trumps policies on the southern border, suggesting that the policies will ultimately fail. Herod comes to mind. Yet for drugs, theres no wall to keep them out.
King Herod, also known as Herod the Great, was a Roman client king of Judea. Herods family were converts to Judaism and his religious commitment was questioned by some elements of Jewish society. While Herod publicly identified himself as a Jew and was considered as such by some, this religious identification was undermined by the decadent lifestyle of the Herodians, which would have earned them the antipathy of observant Jews. Herod later executed several members of his own family, including his wife Mariamne.
The account of the Massacre of the Innocents in the New Testament, in an attempt to kill the infant Jesus, Herod gave orders to kill all boys of the age of two and under in Bethlehem and its vicinity.
As I told you, the phenomenon of migration is compounded by war, hunger and a defensive mindset, which makes us in a state of fear believe that you can defend yourself only by strengthening borders. At the same time, there is exploitation.
The Pope also met with Thailands supreme Buddhist patriarch Somdej Phra Maha Muneewong at Bangkoks Ratchabophit Temple. The meeting took place in front of a 150-year-old gold statue of Buddha. The Pope followed Buddhist custom by removing his shoes. During the meeting, the Pope gave the Buddhist Patriarch the Declaration on Human Brotherhood. The Declaration s a joint statement signed by Pope Francis of the Catholic Church and Sheikh Ahmed el-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, last February in Abu Dhabi. The Pope met with the Imam last month to reinforce the Declaration which declares that all religions should unify.
This guy is the Obama of Popes.
The Pope is a Dope. Disgraceful.
Almost none will be influenced by this stupid statement.
However, those who are left-leaning to begin with WILL use this statement to try to influence those who are not. And it always comes across as opportunistic nonsense.
Instead of calling someone "Hitler" like the rest of the leftist mob, the Pope calls them the first century equivalent..."Herod". Either one is illogical.
The Church under Bergoglio gets no money from me but this sorry imposter will not drive me away from Christ truly present with us in the Eucharist.
And I compare Bergoglio to Che Guevara.
Pelosi and Biden and the Pope - Catholics all.
Muf said.
You would think he would at least get that right.
I’m beginning to think Francis is really a gay activist infiltrator, designed to destroy the Catholic Church.
Just like Obama was designed to destroy the USA.
I agree, he never should have been elected pope, meanwhile Benedict lives on.
The US government is not the USA—her people, her ideals, her greatness. I’ll join you at the gates against the deep state, though.
The body of the Catholic Church is the laity. Not the Pope. I think the Pope is a Satanist charlatan and can go BACK to Hell. The fact the previous pope, Benedict 16, still lives is proof that Francis is an usurper put in place by nefarious entities.
Something unhistorical and eerie happened when Benedict stepped down. He was said to be in ill health and would soon die or lose his facilities. Yet here it is, 7 years later, he’s alive and still writing about God and Church. There was no reason for him to step down unless he was forced so another could take his place—and now look what Francis has done!
As far as the people who make up the Church—no.
You’d be wrong to condemn them collectively.
I’m getting there.
Worse, I think something really evil is going on at the Vatican. By the way, I’ve been to the Vatican several times, took Mass with Saint JPII presiding in St Peter Square on a Wednesday appearance, even got to shake his hand as he went by in the Pope-mobile. We also did Christmas Midnight Mass under St JPII also (that was a act of endurance—11:00 PM until 4:30 AM).
Because I was stationed in Italy for 3 years, I spent enough time in Rome to visit and really study the Church, her history and all the sites.
I even climbed up to the cupola on St Peter’s!
I love the art, beauty and history.
But I think something very bad has been given the Keys.
In WWII the USA bombed, strafed, shot, and shelled the German people because they supported one man and his party. A nation, religion, company, etc., is defined by its leader.
If Catholics refuse to throw off their evil leader it implies their consent.
Little Nicky,
A Movie.
Says the serpent in the Garden and Judas betraying Christians in China.
This man does not fear God because he certainly doesn’t believe in Him.
I am not Catholic, I am Jewish - but I have an observation:
The Pope (generic term-not this particular guy) has a lot of moral credibility, and people tend to listen to him, because he sticks with his job description - that of a moral/religious leader. When he (or any other moral/religious leader from any religion) starts to enter the realm of politics, he should realize that he is no longer entitled to any deference.
That being said, this particular Pope has long since given up the moral credibility that the popes of modern times have had, because he has entered the politic arena. This latest statement is just more icing on the cake. As such, I feel no reason to defer to or respect him on political matters - in that, he is just another human being, regardless of his day job. So...Francis, long known as an anti-American with Communist leanings, can kiss my ass when it comes to his criticisms of this President in particular, and this country in general.
“If you want to ship everyone from south and east of the mediterranean into vatican city, feel free to do so. “
I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it if Trump said or tweeted:
“In light of Pope Francis’ criticism of me for building a wall to protect the United States, I would point out that he has a long-standing wall around Vatican City. For him to be intellectually honest, I have a message for him: Pope Francis, tear down that wall!”
I would argue that the religion that causes the most refugees is Islam. So why doesn’t the Pope address that?
I hope you decide to donate directly to charities instead.
Pope Che can kiss my hairy butt!
First one should know: Pope is infallible on matters of faith only, on everything else he is just a normal person. I wish he would keep his opinions on things not relevant to faith to himself.
