UPDATE: Columbus Fire Chief Steve Martin says Hazmat and bomb squad crews, responded to a residence in the area at around 6 p.m. He added that authorities are responding to an unconfirmed report that someone building a nuclear device claimed they were injured, per WBNS-TV.
Emergency crews are currently investigating a report of a possible small nuclear reactor inside a residential garage in Columbus, Ohio, the Columbus Dispatch reports.
Bomb squad have reportedly been called to the scene at a home on the 6300 block of Chippenhook Court, located off the west side of Sawmill Road and just off the east side of Route 33. Hazmat crews have also been called to the scene, per WCMH-TV.
Chippenhook Court has reportedly been evacuated as crews investigate the report. Batallion Chief Steve Martin, the Columbus Division of Fire spokesman, is reportedly en-route to the scene.
No further details have been given. We will provide more information as it becomes available.
Hmmm... be funny if a guy cracked fusion in his garage. Because if he hasn’t radiation poisoned himself to death, he will be a VERY rich man!
Also, unlicensed fusion reactors are totally legal, TMK.
Fission reactors, on the other hand, costs millions/year just to keep your paperwork up to date with the NRC, before they send in nice people to secure your reactor and shut it down, and put you in prison for illegal operation of a fission reactor.
It’s possible he irradiated some thorium or U238 with neutrons off a fusor design (a not-even-close to break even fusion reactor design you CAN build in your garage, given enough money & time). But my understanding here is that the neutron flux is not really enough to convert very much material to fissile isotopes. But who knows? Most people wouldn’t try it anyway, because it is a waste of time, and even if you could make enough material yourself from available U238 or thorium, you run into the reactor licensing issue.
Oh, they can see fission reactions with satellites pretty easy. Lots of gamma rays for a good size reaction, with nothing but a garage for shielding!

UPDATE 3: The man reportedly told bomb squad that he sustained radio frequency burns while working on a quantum physics generator in his garage, according to Battalion Chief Steve Martin, the Columbus Division of Fire spokesman, speaking to the Columbus Dispatch.
We have no reason to believe that he was trying to make anything that would do anyone any harm, Martin added.
UPDATE 2: Haley Nelson of WSYX-TV reports that a resident was working on a quantum physics generator at the home and was burned. The type of burns caused confusion among first responders, prompting a precautionary evacuation of about 40 homes.
Teams have not picked up any radiation at this time, but are continuing their investigation.
No, that kid died 3 years ago at 39 from drugs and alcohol.
It was Sheldon.
What, Hillary had some extra URANIUM to sell?
If it is a weapon then it is protected by the 2Amd, at least in what the 2AMD acually says if not what the politicians decide.
“’MERICA!!”
So proud of this guy!
So he microwaved his face, basically.
Not fun, and wow, not incredibly bright!
And microwaves will not make you glow, unless you burn yourself to carbon and ignite (or convert your boiling off gasses to plasma temporarily).
Sounds like that Boy Scout who built a reactor in his garage a few years ago. He used a bunch or smoke detectors and lantern mantles. David Charles Hahn. Of course he died about 3 or 4 years ago.
I guess he didn’t have sun time and was trying to get a suntan on his taint skin.
Who here has NOT tried to build a small nuclear reactor inside his or her garage???
DANG!

Quantum physics generator = John Titor’s time machine.
Maybe he cracked 1.22 gigawatts?
I’m confused. Was he building a quantum physics test answer generator, or was he was building a Jacob’s ladder and tried to use mom’s car as a faraday cage?
Young Sheldon....is dat you?
Neighborhood nuclear superiority!
And yes, meth labs are awful - one of my kids is a cop, and they have to wear hazmat gear when going into these places because people have died or gotten very sick from exposure to the fumes.
