South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, blasted a Black Lives Matter activist who started a fight at his campaign event organized by black community leaders.
"It's unfortunate, and it shows kind of where politics is come to, especially for somebody to interrupt an African American woman who is speaking about her truth and her experience," the 2020 Democratic presidential contender told MSNBC in a Thursday interview. The 37-year-old was not present at the event. "But, this is the climate we are in," he added about the brawl.
On Wednesday, the Buttigieg campaign held an event for black leaders, which was crashed by Black Lives Matter protesters. At one point, a man grabbed the microphone from Councilwoman Sharon McBride. "Who chose these people as the black leaders?" the man yelled as organizers tried to wrestle the microphone from his hand.
A woman at one point raised her cane to strike the protester before being restrained.
