The Newsweek reporter who published an inaccurate story about President Trump's Thanksgiving Day plans has been fired. The outlet's original story claimed the president only planned on tweeting and golfing during his holiday break, neglecting to mention his trip to Afghanistan.
Newsweeks Jessica Kwong, whose Twitter handle identifies her as a political reporter "covering Trump administration and family," initially published the article Thursday morning, before the president's trip to Afghanistan was announced publicly. The story's initial headline was, How is Trump spending Thanksgiving? Tweeting, golfing and more.
Newsweek investigated the failures that led to the publication of the inaccurate report that President Trump spent Thanksgiving tweeting and golfing rather than visiting troops in Afghanistan," a Newsweek representative told the Washington Examiner. "The story has been corrected, and the journalist responsible has been terminated. We will continue to review our processes and, if required, take further action.
Hours after the president's trip was announced, Newsweek edited Kwong's story and added a note at the bottom of it. The beginning of the story now focuses on the president's trip and his speech to the troops, while the new headline reads, How is Trump spending Thanksgiving? Tweeting, golfing and surprising U.S. troops in Afghanistan.
he note at the end of the story reads, "This story has been substantially updated and edited at 6:17 p.m. EST to reflect the president's surprise trip to Afghanistan. Additional reporting by James Crowley."
Kwong addressed the update on social media tweeting, "Trump headed to Afghanistan to surprise U.S. troops on Thanksgiving https://newsweek.com/trump-thanksgi Deleting this tweet because it was written before knowing about the presidents surprise visit to Afghanistan-an honest mistake. Story has already been updated, as shown in the screenshot."
Trump and his son Donald Trump Jr. both weighed in on the story on social media. "Fake news gonna fake!" Trump Jr. said in a tweet with a screen capture of Newsweek's original headline. The president added, "I thought Newsweek was out of business?"
Jessica Kwong did not respond to a request for comment.
This will free up the reporter to get a job with a much more significant publication like, say, the East Dogpatch Weekly Advertiser and Garage Sale Guide
I read his WH schedule was empty.
Kwong printed an accusation as fact. The media are populated by journalists brought up under the worship of the narrative - this is largely worship of themselves, but that’s another discussion - and the part of the country they serve really believes as Joe Biden put it, in “truth over fact.” What has changed is that the part of the country that still does prefer fact to narrative has found a voice at last and there are quite a few more of us than the j-schools care to admit. I would forgive Ms. Kwong a certain astonishment over her dismissal (if that’s what it actually was) because she truly believed she was doing her job. Which she was; the rest of us just aren’t supposed to notice it.
a rare example of TDS being punished.
No worries, the Washington fake comPOST will immediately hire her!! SCUMBAGS!!
No matter what when it came out that he was with the troops, the golfing part of the story was false and should have been corrected. But it was left in the Headline as well as most of the body. Visiting the troops was “and more”. And only mentioned at the bottom of the article. It was clearly misleading in a very obvious way.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. She had probably already accepted a position elsewhere and was set to start work with her new employer this coming Monday.
Lets give credit where credit is due. They took action...now lets see.
Dont kid yourself. They burned an expendable. She will probably get rewarded for her service although her career may take a detour.
There is no shortage of pre-indoctrinated journalism graduates waiting to replace her.
Are you kidding?
That's like saying about the bank robber who held up his hands in surrender to the cop 'let's give credit where credit is due, he surrendered, didn't he'?
Seesh.
If you’ve nothing bad to say about the left then say nothing at all. They want to kill my family and I don’t appreciate you digging up praises for them. I don’t appreciate it a lot. Never speak positively of them, ever.
Snowflake probably called her mom saying how unfair it was - and the enabling mom likely agreed.
No, its nothing like that. Dont make more of it than it is. She was wrong, not a crime, and Newsweek took action. Good for them. Now lets see if it continues.
Really? This reporter wants to kill your family? Give me a break. Dont over dramatize this particular incident.
Thats why I said lets see. If it continues, good. If not, no surprise.
Newsweek is going to turn into a fair publication because they got caught publishing a complete false smear
ok
When does she start at CNN?
Unlike Donna Chang.. . Seinfeld.
