The Newsweek reporter who published an inaccurate story about President Trump's Thanksgiving Day plans has been fired. The outlet's original story claimed the president only planned on tweeting and golfing during his holiday break, neglecting to mention his trip to Afghanistan.
Newsweeks Jessica Kwong, whose Twitter handle identifies her as a political reporter "covering Trump administration and family," initially published the article Thursday morning, before the president's trip to Afghanistan was announced publicly. The story's initial headline was, How is Trump spending Thanksgiving? Tweeting, golfing and more.
Newsweek investigated the failures that led to the publication of the inaccurate report that President Trump spent Thanksgiving tweeting and golfing rather than visiting troops in Afghanistan," a Newsweek representative told the Washington Examiner. "The story has been corrected, and the journalist responsible has been terminated. We will continue to review our processes and, if required, take further action.
Hours after the president's trip was announced, Newsweek edited Kwong's story and added a note at the bottom of it. The beginning of the story now focuses on the president's trip and his speech to the troops, while the new headline reads, How is Trump spending Thanksgiving? Tweeting, golfing and surprising U.S. troops in Afghanistan.
he note at the end of the story reads, "This story has been substantially updated and edited at 6:17 p.m. EST to reflect the president's surprise trip to Afghanistan. Additional reporting by James Crowley."
Kwong addressed the update on social media tweeting, "Trump headed to Afghanistan to surprise U.S. troops on Thanksgiving https://newsweek.com/trump-thanksgi Deleting this tweet because it was written before knowing about the presidents surprise visit to Afghanistan-an honest mistake. Story has already been updated, as shown in the screenshot."
Trump and his son Donald Trump Jr. both weighed in on the story on social media. "Fake news gonna fake!" Trump Jr. said in a tweet with a screen capture of Newsweek's original headline. The president added, "I thought Newsweek was out of business?"
Jessica Kwong did not respond to a request for comment.
Obvious, we have nothing really better to do.
A great FR moment happens again:
Kwong got the gong for being wrong!
Or: Gonging the Kwong for being wrong!
Really on this I’m going to side with you reporter...
it was a secret trip!..
its would of had a cover story
That Trump was going to have a typically boring Thanksgiving. Of Golf and Turkey
She printed the cover story..
That just means the White House had good security for this secret trip..
Newsweeks Jessica Kwong was fired for being wrong!

Two kwongs don’t make a right.
Making an honest mistake under these conditions would be understandable.
The real problem was the venom and snark of the article. She was writing for a diminishing core of readers who just lap up "news" sources like Newsweek.
It wasn't a mistake like, "The President plans a quiet holiday at home." That could have been covered by a correction that said, "Obviously, we didn't know the details of the President's trip." And it would have been no big deal.
Instead, it was a typical Orange Man Bad story. She and Newsweek looked like complete hacks, and no amount of corrections could have fixed it.
A whole lot of people are tired of this kind of garbage.
I really doubt that Jessica wrote that piece in order to provide cover for the president’s trip.
Within 48 hours she will be working for the New York Times.
Lefties protect their own.
And that is unforgivable.
Newsweek has no editors; its just a place for unemployed internet influencers to drop click-bait anti-Trump garbage and pad their resumes. I doubt they even paid her a salary.
That’s a shame.
1. Was Ms. Kwong really "terminated", or was she given a low profile opportunity somewhere else in the (cough, cough) "news" organization; and,
2. If "terminated", will she be quietly be picked up by a fellow-traveling (cough, cough) "news" organization or network?
One suspects that she will not find herself in the unemployment line.
NYT to hire in 3, 2, 1
‘An Asian female at that.’
I’d be a lot more impressed if they fired a black female; the most sacrosanct cohort on earth...
We still have a long way to go but we are winning the war. Like I said, all it takes is for good people to stand up to evil.
A lot of people were saying that conservatives ought to abandon social media and leave it for the liberals.
I'm glad that advice wasn't taken.
I am so happy he surprised everyone with his visit. But what if he went to palm Beach had a family dinner and played golf. The man works like a dog and had never taken a vacation in 3 years.
No, but you might have called her into your office for some stern discipline and one-on-one mentoring.
Did Newsweek really fire him or just transfer him to the NYT?
My brother is executive editor of a major newspaper. He has to cut costsusually once or twice a yearusually by laying off reporters and low level editors. This has been going on for years.
Yeah for a reporter to get fired for Hoax News is unheard of.
Nothing a good spanking couldn’t fix.
