Report: Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp to Defy Trump, Appoint Establishment-Backed Kelly Loeffler to Senate

Georgia Republican Gov. Brian Kemp will likely tap business executive Kelly Loeffler to the U.S. Senate despite strong criticism from his conservative base over Loffler’s affiliation with Planned Parenthood, Stacey Abrams, and establishment Republicans, according to a report released Friday.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Friday that Kemp plans to tap business executive Loeffler next week as he will attempt to appeal to Georgia suburban women despite the conservative opposition to Loeffler.

Kemp’s potential nomination of Loeffler will defy President Donald Trump, prominent conservative organizations, and Georgia’s conservative base that helped Kemp get elected to the governor’s office.

Breitbart News has reported how Loeffler has concerning ties to Democrat icon Stacey Abrams, and also that Loeffler’s basketball team, the Atlanta Dream, has promoted the abortion provider Planned Parenthood. Loeffler has also donated $750,000 to Mitt Romney’s failed 2012 presidential campaign as well as hundreds of thousands of dollars to former Speaker Paul Ryan’s (R-WI) campaigns and PACs.

The Georgia governor’s nomination of Loeffler could also spark a contentious primary fight, as House Judiciary Committee ranking member Rep. Doug Collins (R-GA), Trump’s favorite for the seat, told the Journal-Constitution that he is “strongly” considering a run for the Senate seat if he is not picked.

Trump has reportedly lobbied Kemp to tap Collins three times in recent weeks. Trump expressed doubt over Loeffler, who remains politically untested.

Reports that Kemp will nominate Loeffler to the U.S. Senate has engendered outcry from conservatives in the House as well as across Georgia’s Republican base.

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), a strong ally of Trump and supporter of his America First policies, said that Kemp is “hurting President Trump” by nominating a business executive who donated “$700k plus to Mitt Romney and nothing to Trump until she wanted in the Senate?”

The scent of the birth of another Senator Lisa Murkowski is wafting in the Georgia air tonight. We are being BETRAYED by a bought-off TRAITOR Kemp!

The reason is simple. McConnell doesn’t want any real conservatives in HIS senate.

He and his minions will thwart, by any means necessary (remember Mississippi?), a conservative getting into the senate.

A moderate Republican appointment creates a moderate Republican incumbent.

Mitt Romney couldn’t be happier. He has an ally in the way now.

Clarification:

Of course, I meant that I hope Georgia’s Doug Collins prevails.

” I don’t consider myself a Republican or a conservative. I’m an independent Trump voter.”

Big agree.

There are no RINOs, there is no GOPe, they're Republicans. And if this is where conservatism leads then no thanks. And, as it turns out, the US Constitution does not provide a sufficient guarantee of our freedoms nor of our nation's sovereignty.

I've never voted, ever at all, until Trump. I've never given a pol a nickel until I gave much to Trump. All decided while he rode down the escalator. I didn't even need to hear his historic declaration of candidacy. But when I did it delivered 100 times my already high expectations.

It's stunning and amazing that The Donald may be the greatest president in our history. I'm not optimistic beyond his presidency... but...it's DJT on the job and if anyone can right our nation he can.

It means that GA lost a Congressional seat (GA 6th, Newt’s old district) and a lot of state and local seats due to GA suburban women voting Dem, and Kemp is trying something to offset that.

Trump is pretty darn good, for a relative political rookie, but he’s not infallible.

GA FReeper ping.

The Republican Party has run its course and no longer has value, except to Democrats.

It needs to die.

She’s got the money to buy the seat. There is no other reason to appoint her. Kemp is expecting something in return.

Don Jr. also campaigned hard for Kemp, too.

What put you off the moniker of conservative? Too many liberals lying about being conservative, or something else?

Taking *any* state for granted is f**king stupid and lazy. Doing so almost cost Ted Cruz his seat in a state that went overwhelmingly Republican at the state level.

Taking things for granted is what loses Republicans seats especially now that Boomers are aging out of the voting pool. Subsequent generations are less inclined to just pull the “All one party” label and more inclined to toss politicians who appear to be taking them for granted, peeing on their heads and telling them it’s raining.

"Alas, can’t we take any southern state for granted any longer???"

I am afraid the answer is no. The GOP's southern strategy of Nixon is drowning in a sea of demographic changes.

Any politician of any party that takes states for granted is an idiot. Remember, Hillary did that with Trump and it backfired on her too.

I was wondering the same thing.

I no longer identify with the Republican Party either, because there are too many people in it who are not conservatives.

But I would never renounce conservatism.

I think it is all we have unless we want to be Leftists. There are too many gutless leftists and committed leftists in the ranks of the Republican Party to identify with them anymore.

The Constitution doesn’t guarantee freedoms? It was designed, in its original form, to do so, certainly prior to being deformed by certain amendments in the last century.
Capture one or both of the political parties in the United States.

Thinking that the GOP represents conservatism is erroneous.

I don’t see any “independent” alternative to Constitutional conservatism either.

What’s remarkable is that there have been several publications warning about the GOP’s shift left, or as “The Naked Communist” put it, the “capture” of the two major parties by the left, and none of these have been referred to even in the present day and too many people act like that the left-captured GOP actually does represent “conservatism”.

Thanks for your highly profound and wise response.

What with Matt Bevin’s loss in KY and Rispone’s defeat in LA, it’s quite sobering to acknowledge how steep a mountain GOP/Conservatives will have to surmount to win next November.
Putting such monumental effort into myriad races across the country is daunting, to say the least. Battling to hold onto two senate seats in Georgia is but one case in point. I wonder how Cruz’s colleague, John Cornyn will fare as well!
Another much neglected contest looms in Arizona where McSally is quite vulnerable up against Mark Kelly, who will be focusing his campaign on gun control in light of what his wife, former Rep. Gabby Giffords suffered when she was shot in the head. Corey Gardner seems destined to lose to Hickenlooper in Colorado. All of these facts make holding the Upper Chamber particularly dicey, where of course SCOTUS nominees are confirmed.

Then, we have the plethora of retirements again this cycle of GOP House members. Finding sufficient appealing and capable candidates to flip the House majority back to GOP hands certainly presents a mighty tall task.

Combating all of these aforementioned obstacles for Conservatives next year is both incredible intimidating and discouraging.

Last, but definitely not least of all, everything hinges on President Trump being reelected, without which nothing else will be of consequence!!!

It is distressing. It has probably been nearly two decades since I gave a cent to the Republican Party.

They don’t represent me. (See my tagline which explains it)

The Left has gone far beyond any “middle ground” we would find even if we were inclined to look for it.

I’m not.
