As every contemporary school child knows, the first Thanksgiving took place in 1621, when our Pilgrim forefathers took a break from slaughtering Indigenous Peoples to invite them to dinner and infect them with smallpox, before embarking on their mission to fry the planet so that the world would end on Jan. 22, 2031. (Copyright: Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez)
Consider this description of the Pilgrims' treatment of the Indigenous Peoples:
"They were the worst of conquerors. Inordinate pride, the lust of blood and dominion, were the mainsprings of their warfare; and their victories were strained with every excess of savage passion."
You've probably guessed -- unless you are an American college student -- that that's not a description of the Pilgrims' treatment of Indigenous Peoples at all. It is a description of some Indigenous Peoples' treatment of other Indigenous Peoples, provided by Francis Parkman, the world's foremost Indian scholar.
It was Indians, not Pilgrims, who let out the "Mohawk war-cry" that made the blood run cold.
This is why the Wampanoag had a lot to celebrate that first Thanksgiving. They were delighted to have such excellent (European) allies against the terroristic Iroquois and Narragansett.
The Pilgrims also had much to be thankful for. Of more than 100 passengers aboard the Mayflower, only 44 survived the first winter, felled by scurvy, malnutrition and the bitter cold. Even the ones who made it did so largely thanks to the friendly Wampanoag, who shared their food with the Europeans and taught them how to till the land.

I can’t imagine Thanksgiving Dinner at Ann Coulter’s house.
Maybe she is disciplined enough to turn it off for a while, and just be Ann, not someone at the center of a debate.
Maybe, but I’d be surprised if she could resist the compulsion to disagree about something, even which fork to use first.
Marking.
The College Fix has multiple such articles already.
Ping.
I can imagine Thanksgiving dinner with Ann Coulter at “The Cabin”.
Naughty me!
In the great REAL MEN THANKSGIVING TRADITIION, let infect liberals with food poisoning and exterminate them.

A very good article. I am impressed she quoted Parkman. The trouble with history is that it is often complex and most people don’t have the interest and persistence to read deeply and extensively enough to understand it. Too often they buy into the twisted versions of history that are sold by people who have a axe to grind.
I started my day by watching CAPTAIN FROM CASTILE with Tyrone Power. Caesar Romero was Hernando Cortez. Wonder if he was any kin to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
I will probably watch NORTHWEST PASSAGE in a few days.
That’s hilarious! 7am and the best laugh I’ve had in a long time!
Happy Thanksgiving, my FRiend...
If you loved the movie, you gotta read the book!
I found a copy among my father's possessions, with his name in it, from back in the 1940s. I read it. What a wonderful book! One of my favorites!
Catana Pérez is one of the greatest heroines in all literature. What a wonderful, powerful, beloved, unforgettable woman! Tears come to my eyes just thinking about her!
And the final episode, when the parents of Pedro de Vargas meet her again brought tears to my eyes! I almost wept!
Tyrone Power could not do justice to the character of Pedro de Vargas though.
Shellabarger was a scholar and an expert on 16th century Europe. His Prince of Foxes is also an excellent novel, exploring Italy of the time, as Captain from Castile explored Spain. Therein, he created another unforgettable female character, the Saint, Blessed Lucia Brocadelli. The scene in which she bravely confronts the powerful and evil Cesare Borgia is spellbinding and unforgettable.
(I don't think the movie of Prince of Foxes was very good. As I recall, they left Lucia out completely, and she was the crux of the story. The scene between her and Borgia--as I recall--was not even in the movie, and it was absolutely the best part of the tale. It's hard to imagine that even Hollywood could have ignored such a scene!)
The pilgrims made a geographical error. They assumed the latitude of Plymouth weather would be like that of Spain, warmer than England.
They were wrong. Massachusetts is cold as hell
Ah yes Ann, while your forebearers were doing the Lord’s good work here in the new world, the Puritan champion Oliver Cromwell was busy massacring Catholic men, women and children in Ireland. A virtual cornucopia of industrious do-gooders.
I watched PRINCE OF FOXES last night. Should have been done in color but still great!
