Trump lunches with two of his biggest Senate GOP critics
The Hill ^ | November 21, 2019 | Alexander Bolton

Posted on 11/21/2019 10:52:02 AM PST by jazusamo

President Trump invited two of his biggest Senate Republican critics, Sens. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) and Susan Collins (R-Maine), to the White House Thursday for an unspecified discussion.

The invitation comes as impeachment hearings in the House continue. The House is widely expected to impeach Trump, which would create a trial in the Senate where Romney and Collins would be two of the most scrutinized GOP votes.

Romney said before the meeting that he planned to talk about his own bill, the Trust Act, and the president’s plan for regulating vaping products.

“If I’m asked for questions I want to talk to him about my Trust Act and get his perspectives on that. Vaping as well, I’d like to talk to him about his vaping plans,” Romney said.

The other Senate attendees at Thursday’s lunch were Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), James Lankford (R-Okla.), John Hoeven (R-N.D.) and Rand Paul (R-Ky.).

Thursday’s event was the latest in a series of lunches that Trump has held with Republican senators.

Last week he previewed for a small group of senators the transcript from his April 21 phone call congratulating Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on his election.

Some Republican senators have used these meetings as a chance to give the president advice, such as Sen. Rob Portman (R-Ohio), who in a recent lunch session urged the president to not let himself become too personally consumed by impeachment and let his Republican allies on Capitol Hill take up more of the burden of defense.

Grassley on Thursday said he had no agenda for the meeting.

“I’m going to see how the meeting goes. If they have an agenda, we’ll have to stick to their agenda,” he said.

It's not about 'vaping', Mitt. It's about you being vapid.

My fear with Romney is that HE would become a leaker/ whistleblower if Trump tries to make a deal. That POS is NOT to be trusted.

"Nah! The military does not make deals with traitors. "

Of course what do you do when certain parts of the military are part of the den of treason?

I’m sure it’s just Trump committing treason against the deep state for lunch.

Yum.

Good.

He does not work for them.

The dems will scream all sorts of things before this is over.

I hope they scream for their mothers.

possibility of anonymous vote by the “courageous” Senators....

Like reparations and fully paid illegal alien medical care, this is a red flag issue for many in the electorate.

Cowards keeping their heads down to vote anonymously will cause a big reaction, I think.

Even if Romney smilingly goes on all the TV news panels first to declare “I will vote yes to convict Trump.” A “hero.” /s

We know who they are and they don’t count for much anymore. Just watch the way Vindman is being torn apart but he is part of an act of desperation. These traitors are not dealing from a place of strength. The new chairmen are Trump people.

Collins voted to place Brett Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court. She knew there would be a good chance it would cost her her Senate seat. I don’t agree with a lot of her politics but I certainly call that vote courageous.

Courageous? A GOP Senator voting for a GOP SCOTUS nom is couragous? Couragous for doing her job? Is that far we have fallen?

The fact is Collins helped block the obviously outstanding Ratcliffe from being Trump’s DNI. Reportly, she felt he was “too tough” on Mueller. Never mind there is a coupist assault raging out of control in the executive branch.

We have a US Army office colluding with a CIA officer to remove a duly elected POTUS. And Collins says POTUS is not entitled to an outstanding DNI? That’s courageous? Nope. It’s pathetic. Frankly, given her performance or non-performance she deserves to lose.

“PDJT is sensing where this impeachment might be going in the Senate, especially if the vote is anonymous, as there are rumblings of this.”

If the Senate convicts on an anonymous vote, the entire party goes down big time in 2020. Federal, state and local elections because Trump supporters will stay home.

If it convicts honestly and publicly, every R Senator who votes for conviction will go down, big time, but the damage in down-ticket elections will be less pronounced.

So it really depends on whether the Romney wing of the party wants to take the entire party down or just themselves.

Romney and the RINO’s lose power either way.

Given that choice, Romney and the other RINO’s will elect to hold onto power. These are not good people and they will vote to preserve themselves, their money and their power. Principle is irrelevant to them. Therefore, the Senate will not convict.
