Local train crossings blocked, all trains stopped nation-wide (Lansing, MI)

LANSING, MI (WILX) -- Capital Area Ingham County Alerts sent out a notification that "all trains nation-wide have been stopped for an undetermined amount of time."

The alert said specific crossings that are blocked in our area are Hagadorn/Service in East Lansing and Marsh/Haslett in Meridian Township.

News 10 reached out to East Lansing Police Chief Steve Gonzalez regarding the issue.

"I don't know if it's a system failure or what, but it seems pretty large-scale," Gonzalez said.

He said he is not aware of any injuries or accidents that would case a train to stop here locally.

Marc Magliari, an Amtrak spokesman, said the delay is caused by Canadian National, owner of the railroad.

“They’re having a service disruption and we do not anticipate it will affect our operations this evening,” Magliari said.

Magliari declined to say what the service disruption is and why Amtrak is convinced its next train scheduled to pass through mid-Michigan at 8 p.m. won’t be delayed.

“I’ve been briefed by CN,” Magliari said. “They can speak to you about the disruption of service.”

News 10’s attempts to reach CN officials early Thursday afternoon weren’t successful.

I think someone at the Ingham County Alerts meant to say "county wide" but someone interpreted it as "country wide."

Ah, okay, that would explain why this story isn't bigger news.

"all trains nation-wide have been stopped

Huh?

If that were true wouldn’t Drudge’s page be full of huge red text and sirens and explosions and stuff?

Just because it’s a train thread... A buddy and I just got back from a road trip to see the Union Pacific 4014 Big Boy. The largest steam locomotive there is, and the only one of eight remaining that actually runs. I have rarely been so impressed. 133 feet long, 17 feet tall, 1.3MM pounds. Each driver wheel is 68” tall. Almost takes your breath to see it move.

The Amtrak to Chicago just went by doing 79 mph (still East of Ann Arbor) and there’s a freight going by right now. I’m about 3 or 4 mile from the track.

The tracks to which you refer are owned by the Norfolk Southern, not the Canadian National, the railroad that is experiencing the outage.

According to the Amtrak tracker, there are currently two Amtrak trains in Michigan. One going westbound from Detroit towards Battle Creek is traveling at 63 MPH, and one Eastbound from Battle Creek towards Jackson traveling at 57 MPH.

Looking at the history of both trains, they are both about an hour and a half late, but both were essentially on time until about 11:30 AM.

So whatever caused the hour-and-a-half stoppage appears to have been cleared up.

Canada. CN bought the Illinois Central decades ago and more recently acquired the Wisconsin Central.

I could start a conspiracy theory about how it’s an attempted terrorist attack. Would that help?

Only if you can frame Canada’s rail unions as terrorists.

I live along Canadian National tracks, and there's one going north as we speak (intermodal -- shipping containers).

Can't imagine what the heck they're talking about. There's been no stoppage all morning here (northern Illinois).

Misleading headline, again.

No, people, NOT all trains are stopped in the whole nation. Basically just Canadian National network of rail.
