EXCLUSIVE: The impeachment inquiry against President Trump has triggered a wave of charges, countercharges, court battles, subpoenas and legal threats.
Now it has produced its first libel suit.
A White House official on Monday sued Politico and one of its reporters over stories and tweets that he says falsely accuse him of lying, deceit and unethical conduct.
Kash Patel, the National Security Councils senior counterterrorism director, is seeking more than $25 million in damages in the suit filed in Virginia. We have reached out to Politico for comment.
The lawsuit also names Natasha Bertrand, a Politico reporter and MSNBC contributor, as well as Politico owner Robert Allbritton. The allegations, which center on what the president was told about the situation in Ukraine, go to the heart of the case for impeachment.
While Politico is the nominal target of the suit, it represents an aggressive attempt by a presidential aide to put Adam Schiffs handling of the impeachment inquiry itself on trial. Describing the Democratic chairman of the House Intelligence Committee as a demagogue with an ax to grind against the president, Patel portrays Schiff as running roughshod over rules and interviewing witnesses to create click-bait headlines and soundbites to feed to his co-conspirators and media sympathizers. Wow, holding the fake news media accountable. What a novel idea.
About time. Trump & Company should have filed hundreds of lawsuits by now against the mainstream media and a variety of congressman like Mad Maxine.
And... people who called for his assassination should have been arrested and put on trial.
Why doesnt Trump prosecute Schiff, Pelosi, et al, for interference in the conduct of Government business, interference in the duties of a sworn law enforcement officer, etc.?
“Why doesnt Trump prosecute Schiff, Pelosi, et al, for interference in the conduct of Government business, interference in the duties of a sworn law enforcement officer, etc.?”
Good question. I’m guessing that congress critters are immune from lawsuits, at least for what they say while on the floor. It wouldn’t surprise me if they’re immune altogether. Have you ever heard of a congress critter ever being sued for anything? I can’t think of any examples off the top of my head.
I think it’s SOP for congress to exempt themselves for laws they pass. Maybe someone who’s better informed than I can weigh in on this...
Yeah the Congress is pretty much immune. Private citizens not so much. However because President Trump is a public figure, he can be verbally abused by any body at any time.
Why should Flynn, Sone & Pappdapolus be the ones going bankrupt because of legal bills, while these liars skate?
Couldn't agree more. Where has the Secret Service been during some of the Left's more rabid moments (e.g., Kathy Griffin and Tom Arnold)?
I cannot speak to US politics, but in the UK and Kanadahar, anything said by a Member of Parliament in the House of Commons is not subject to defamation laws. Outside of the House, it is a different story. I would suspect that be standard operating policy for most ‘democracies’ (or pseudo-democracies, in the case of Kanadahar).
Vindman and Hill could be subpoenaed as material witnesses and made to testify under oath about their charges about Patel.
If Patel can prove that they are hearsay, second-hand speculation, and based on fake leaks, he’s a winner. Time the case a month before the elections.
