Three decades, massive subsidies and yet intermittent wind powers contribution to world energy needs remains little more than a rounding error.
Electricity that cant be delivered as and when its needed has no commercial value; massive subsidies are the only value that attracts investors to wind and solar. Cut the subsidies and wind and solar investment would evaporate, overnight.
As Gail Tverberg explains below, chaotically delivered wind and solar have never worked in the past. So, theres no reason to expect that theyll ever work in future. In a sane and rational world, wed call it a failed experiment, clean up the mess and move on.

As I’ve stated before our energy supply needs are like a cake , and all wind and solar power can ever hope to be is the frosting ,or maybe even just the sprinkles as another poster suggested.
Power plants must have sufficient capacity for periods of peak demand. This is not negotiable. Solar and/or wind power arrives at unpredictable moments. There may be none at all, at a given moment. The power plant must be ready for that and be able to deliver power.
Laws that mandate power plants to buy electricity from solar/wind units are stupid laws. Electricity is not like water. Those laws are a disguised subsidy to those with wind/solar power, paid by the other users of electricity.

“There is no evidence that industrial wind power is likely to have a significant impact on carbon emissions. The European experience is instructive. Denmark, the worlds most wind-intensive nation, with more than 6,000 turbines generating 19% of its electricity, has yet to close a single fossil-fuel plant. It requires 50% more coal-generated electricity to cover wind powers unpredictability, and pollution and carbon dioxide emissions have risen (by 36% in 2006 alone).”
There is one place where they do work, on your house, trailer, or rv. Not on the grid though.
You can mount one to power a device that doesn’t need constant power, like an aux heater or something similar and it works great.
I’d use them as a source of energy to synthesize liquid fuels that can be used whenever and wherever they’re needed. If, that is, there were no more viable alternatives.
Solar does have it’s uses and I am all for it where it makes sense. I had a choice to make to get electricity to my well, run Power over 1000’ up my mountain or an alternative.
It cost me a little over $5000 to Completely Solar Power/Battery Power and run my well with no generator or backup power under normal circumstances. It is only a 450 AMP Hr system. This will also run the lights, TV and a full size fridge forever!!!
8 6 volt 225 amp hr batteries at Costco $100 each
12 24 volt Solar Panels off craigslist $100 each
1 mppt charge controller off ebay $100
1 Magnum MS4024PAE 24 volt to 240 volt Grid Tie Inverter $2500
Misc wire,boxes,cable,...$500
[[[Under the 25-year deal with developer 8minute Solar Energy, the city would buy electricity from a sprawling complex of solar panels and lithium-ion batteries in the Mojave Desert of eastern Kern County, about two hours north of Los Angeles. The Eland project would meet 6% to 7% of L.A.s annual electricity needs and would be capable of pumping clean energy into the grid for four hours each night.]]]
I guess they now have no problem bothering the poor desert animals now.
[[[The problem with using battery power instead of hydrocarbon chemical power is that it is not as thermodynamically efficient and it is economically uncompetitive by a wide margin. The laws of physics and economics are not going to change because some people dont believe in them.]]]
The left lives in the world of feelings and intentions, not reality.
No matter how many people it harms or kills.
Solar PV inverters must receive their source frequency from the grid.
If the grid is off, so are your inverters. It’s part of their UL rating.
The writer fails to grasp that the Gov’t knows and understand all these things. It is their intent to impose a feudal society, in which the serfs get only what the aristocracy grants them, while the aristocrats live in luxury.
You may enjoy seeing this method of storing energy. Quite impressive and a thousand times more valuable than solar or wind.

Your comment beat me to it.
Socialism and wind/solar energy have that perfect world fantasy about them that non-thinkers are attracted to. When it’s proven that neither work, then these non-thinkers just double down on it thinking that will fix it.
Just look at the people of Venezuela or people leaving California only to Kalifornicate their new home.
What is missing is a utility scale storage device.
The folks at Ambridge (Formerly Liquid Metal Battery Company) have just such a device.
This is game-changing technology.

I have an automatic door on my chicken house that uses 4 AA rechargeable batteries that are kept charged by a small solar cell. Anything else is just impractical. Maybe something like a battery that runs an electric fence and I have seen adds for automatic gate that use solar power to keep battery charged but I imagine it would not stand up well to large traffic loads maybe an open daily kind of thing.
I lived several years in Palm Springs and saw the rush to build windmills and I think I recall the electric company offering to sell you the power from those windmills at a premium price, don't know if the greeners actually used that option. I do remember Sun Bus lines powering all their busses with Natural Gas but guess they will have to go solar since CA has decided to outlaw NG.
The Electric Mountain is a “pumped storage facility”. The Tennessee Valley Authority built one at Raccoon Mountain. It went online in 1978.
It’s purpose is to supply electricity during peak hours and recharge itself using electricity from elsewhere during off-peak hours.
It’s primary value is that it can be stopped and started quickly which allows the baseload plants such as coal-fired and nuclear steam to not have to be started and stopped often.
Starting and stopping the steam plants shortens their lifetimes because of expansion and contraction of the steam pipes which leads to cracking and fatigue.
A pumped storage facility is a net user of electricity rather than a producer. Why? Because it takes more energy to pump the water up than is produced when the water comes down through the turbines. It’s like a battery.

So if you green power system uses Solar PV inverters, and the grid is off, so are your inverters and your local power?
Thanks

Interesting setup. Thanks for describing it. I imagine you figured that it’s cheaper in the long run than running a generator.
Why did you choose that particular inverter?
