Flashback: Obama Fired All Bush Appointed Ambassadors In 2008
Daily Caller ^ | November 15, 2019 | Shelby Talcott

The former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch testified Friday about President Donald Trump firing her amid an alleged “smear campaign,” but firing ambassadors appointed by former presidents is commonplace.

Former President Barack Obama fired all ambassadors appointed by former President George W. Bush in 2008, The Washington Post previously reported. Yovanovitch testified Friday that the Trump administration, including the president’s personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani, “kneecapped” her. She said State Department leaders did not support her after being recalled in May.

“Political ambassadors sometimes are permitted to stay on briefly during a new administration, but the sweeping nature of the directive suggests that Obama has little interest in retaining any of Bush’s ambassadorial appointees,” WaPo’s 2008 article about Obama’s decision to fire all political ambassadors reads.

Yovanovitch was appointed by Obama in 2016, and newly elected presidents typically re-vamp the positions with their own choices once taking office. Yovanovitch was allowed to stay on for three years after Trump took office, but has testified that senior officials “declined to acknowledge” the “smear campaign” against her leading up to her firing, Politico reported.

As was his prerogative.

And what Trump SHOULD have done.

This will always vex me why he didn’t just clean house on 1/21/2019. He comes from the corporate world where this is standard operating procedure.

I understood that Ambassadors were expected to submit letters of resignation to the new President. These might then either be accepted or rejected. This from a friend in foreign service at State.

I believe Clinton also fired all the assistant AG’s the month he was inaugurated in 1993.

Hey! It’s obvious that you don’t recognize crystal clear writing. Obama fired all the ambassadors that Bush appointed in 2008. He didn’t fire those appointed in 2007 and earlier.

You would never make it through today’s journalism schools. Hell, you’re probably not even WOKE! ;-)

Most people underestimate the true power of the "Office of the President Elect."

What Trump should have 1 hour after the oath. The holdovers have inflicted severe damage at every opportunity. His biggest mistake by far.

Exactly right! How in the world can a CEO NOT clean house on Day 1, especially when he KNOWS how rotten-to-the-core the cadre he inherited was.

I’ve been through a number of board ousters of CEOs and corporate take-overs and, as you say, a thorough house cleaning is SOP.

In one such instance, we have a new president on Monday morning after an emergency weekend board meeting ousted the old pres. The new pres called an all-hands meeting that Monday and actually declared “Nothing is going to change. Steady as she goes.” We all left that meeting laughing in hysterics. Six weeks later, all hell broke loose.

From the 2008 article...

The incoming Obama administration has notified all politically-appointed ambassadors that they must vacate their posts as of Jan. 20, the day President-elect Barack Obama takes the oath of office, a State Department official said.

The clean slate will open up prime opportunities for the president-elect to reward political supporters with posts in London, Paris, Tokyo and the like. The notice to diplomatic posts was issued this week.

Trump is a businessman. When he buys a property from Sheraton, he doesn’t expect the managers who come with the hotel to be conspiring with Sheraton to spy on and undermine him. Keeping the liberal Democratic deadwood in place was his first mistake, when he assumed the presidency.

CEO’s generally don’t clean house because there’s a lot of institutional knowledge in place. Only the top tier of people, maybe a dozen in all, are replaced. But then again, employees in the private sector don’t generally conspire with their former employer against their current employer.

But... I’m told the Bushes are Satanic deep state pedophiles.
That explains why the media loved them so.
Just look at all the secret note-passing at the funeral.

And the secret tunnels. So many tunnels.

w did the same thing, not firing anybody and thinking he could work with them. McLame thought he could reach across the aisle. Press thought so too until he got nominated.
