So Said the battleship defenders right before WWII

So go on record and without equivocation lament the current Navy use of air craft carriers and declare that all air craft carriers should be scuttled. Do it now or shut up.

Carrier group gone. Never had a chance.

You are an idiot.

Carriers are not going away. The Ford will be amazing when it gets the bugs worked out, and it WILL.

The only issue is the prep of the battlefield. It may require some softening up with anti-radiation, or hypersonics or ballistics,,, but NOTHING can replace the large scale tonnage of TNT that a carrier can deliver..

Go look at what happened in exercises against and with the UK’s Type 45s. The Type 45s have problems with their Rolls powerplants overheating in warm climates, but otherwise, they’re really, really good. To the point where we have to tell them to deliberately degrade their capabilities in any exercise so they don’t outpace the Burkes.

The Flight IIIA has been cancelled. Flight III is current production, to be (eventually) followed by the still-on-the-drawing-boards Flight IV.

The un enlightened think the US Navy sends their carriers into harms way during wartime haphazardly and needlessly. Naval warfare is a game balancing risk management, statistics + ship repairing/building capacity. Naval wars are won in the shipyard.

I would also commend your attention here:

Burke has NO significant stealth features and is a big missile magnet in this era.

The carrier you refer to was already the better part 30 years old, having been laid down when the Soviet Union was still a thing. It’d be like taking your fresh barn find 1981 Camaro on a cross country trip after an oil change. It’s not the greatest idea.

I type corrected on the size - but on the other hand, we have no operational frigates and the Gorshkov is both brand new and in current production.

Central_va, for goodness sake...don’t hold back, tell us what you really think...lol

While you are at it....perhaps you could brief the op on how a naval task force can defend against space born weapons headed inbound at 10x the speed of sound?

Thanks, I bet you will have much to say.

Best to you.

Ok, just tell us that you are in favor of all US carriers be scuttled immediately because the are useless. Do it or shut up. Go on record here and now.

You are funny. If you don’t like someones opinion...do you always tell them to ‘shut up’?

Is that the limit of your reasoning prowess?

The conversation is that our carrier forces are totally at risk from space based weapons. Some how you see this a some kind of ‘so then we must scrap the CV’s”.... lol

I have no idea where you come up with that....one does not mean the other.

SO, can you explain how a CV’s will defend against Space Based weaponry? If you can’t or choose not to...then our conversation comes to a polite end.

Best.

Still you obfuscate. I will make it easy for you:

Yea or No; I ShackledNoMore want the USN carrier fleet scuttled and no more carriers in the US fleet because I feel they are obsolete and vulnerable especially from space.

A Yes or No answer please.

Of course not. Never said I did..... BUT this does not mean that they are without cover to space based weapons.

How could you tell them apart from large comms satellites ? Bus sized ones could have a payload of 6-8 rods inside the hull. Made to look like normal stuff. I’m no expert but you may be. Expensive weapons platform if they did exist.

Multiple reasons. You can tell how much thrust a satellite’s thruster is making from the exhaust. You can tell how much mass the thruster is trying to push from how fast it accelerates. Nothing up there has the mass to carry a RFG projectile - they have to be pretty big to survive re-entry in a usable form. And satellites do have to perform orbital correction burns.

You can even tell roughly how much mass a rocket is pushing to orbit from observation and math.

Additionally, everything in space is now tracked by radar, infrared and often photographed optically. Http://stuffin.space is one of many site that’s tracking spacecraft with purely private sector resources.

Very cool. I figured DOD could put stuff up without much fan fare and no one could tell on the orbits if no one is tracking. I will check out the link.

Non-governmental orbital observation has come a long way since 2010 alone. The private space revolution *requires* good orbital observation and we have it. *Everything* in orbit that’s the size of your hand (and sometimes far, far smaller, as you’ll see on the site) is tracked and observed.
