From 1967 to 2019, Republicans controlled the California governorship for 31 of 52 years. So why is there currently not a single statewide Republican officeholder? California also has a Democratic governor and Democratic supermajorities in both houses of the state legislature. Only seven of California's 53 congressional seats are held by Republicans.
In 1994, then-Gov. Pete Wilson backed Proposition 187, which denied state social services to undocumented immigrants. The spin goes that it backfired, alienated the Hispanic community and thus marked the road to Republican perdition.
Not quite.
Prop 187 passed with 59 percent support. Wilson's endorsement of the bill helped its passage, and his support of it aided his landslide 1994 re-election. Among minority voters, 52 percent of Asian and African American voters supported Proposition 187. Some 27 percent of Latinos voted for it.
Liberal groups immediately sued in federal court. Just three days after the measure passed, a federal judge issued a temporary restraining order preventing Proposition 187 from going into effect. A month later, U.S. District Judge Mariana Pfaelzer issued a permanent injunction. Prop 187 never became law.
In effect, two judges nullified the wishes of more than 5 million California voters.
Arnold Schwarzenegger had supported Prop 187. Yet in 2003 he was elected governor. So what caused the Republican demise?
Ironically, radical changes in California demography may have been brought about by Prop 187 -- but not in the way many people think.
The state's population has increased by nearly 10 million in the last quarter century. Yet the growth has been marked by the exodus of some and larger influxes of others.
When Prop 187 passed, there were an estimated 1.5 million undocumented immigrants statewide. In the 25 years since, millions of others have entered the state, and the current number of those still undocumented

I don't want to say it's aliens, but it's aliens.................
Arnold Schwartzenegger
What’s happened? Gerrymandering, for one thing. My district was solid GOP for years until some “retired judges” decided to turn it into a Democrat stronghold.
They are too busy working on their arguments for the conservative case for Trans Reading Hour at local public libraries.
CA Pubs have been RAT lite for 30-40 years anyway.
A great many of the Intelligent People (Republicans) moved out. More will continue the out migration. Pretty soon, Mexico will ask the U.S. to return California to them. Probably not a bad idea as it will be a welfare drain on the U.S. economy.
The flesh eating bacteria AKA Democrats.
Don’t forget vote harvesting.
Republicans have been, and always will be afraid of the leftist media. They cower, and capitulate. Many of those Republicans hate President Trump because he’s a fighter, and they don’t see that as a viable option. The GOP wants to go along to get along. To be friends with those that hate them so they can be invited to cocktail parties.
The left, (the media and Democrats), have become more strident in their hatred of anything that has any resemblance to capitalist or conservative. Therefore, the Republicans have disappeared in CA.
Want to know where the GOP will be in 10 years? Look to CA.
Arnold Schwartzenegger counted as a Republican?
Illegal invaders and open, unfettered election fraud. Those two factors account for 95% of the reason.
Every single time.
The wife and I bailed in 2001, as we could see the writing on the wall...
None us here want to deal with these lunatics
It takes time... but....
There is one undeniable fact about progressive/socialist governments and policies.
They end up destroying the places where they control things.
But, it takes time...
And by the time the destruction happens, they will expect a rescue from the federal government.
Fact is that, if California were an independent country and government, it would have turned into Mexico or a Venezuela or Cuba... a long time ago.
Sooner or later we all will have to!...........
My wife, and I are both California born, raised, residents of California, and both voted straight ticket Republican before we wed, and for 42 years since have continued to vote straight ticket Republican. We cannot speak for any of our co residents of this State.
“CA Pubs have been RAT lite for 30-40 years anyway”.
Are you calling Devin Nunes “RAT lite”?
You should have said ‘some’ Pubs. Bob Dornan was another good conservative Republican from Calif. and he was not “lite”.
