Amid mounting calls for Rodney Reed's exoneration, Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, is just the latest in a long line of state leaders, politicians, and celebrities calling on Governor Greg Abbott to take a closer look at evidence, and to at least put a pause on the execution process.
Reed is scheduled to be executed November 20, but on Monday, CBS Austin caught up with Cruz at a Veterans Day event in Pflugerville, where he said the state needs to take a harder look at the evidence in the Reed case.
"This particular case, there had been meaningful and serious questions raised, calling into question his guilt or his innocence. If there's a real question of innocence, the system needs to stop, and look at the evidence because an innocent man should be set free," Cruz said.
Reed was convicted of the rape and murder of 19-year-old Stacey Stites in Bastrop, but his defense team maintains DNA evidence will prove his innocence.
On Friday, Cruz took to Twitter to support a letter signed by eight Democrats and eight Republicans in the Texas State Senate, which called for a reprieve.

This is a remarkable bipartisan coalition. Having spent yrs in law enforcement, I believe capital punishment can be justice for the very worst murderers, but if there is credible evidence theres a real chance the defendant is innocent, that evidence should be weighed carefully. https://t.co/kaph6D5J6N— Ted Cruz (@tedcruz) November 9, 2019
the problem is there are too many prosecutors who are looking for someone to punish, rather than looking for justice to be done.
can’t disagree with that statement- Justice demands we make as sure as possible the guilt before meeting out the death penalty- IF there is reasonable doubt, then it needs to be investigated and cleared up-
Thus guy raped a disabled woman and a 12 year old. Proved by DNA
I agree we need to be sure before executing someone. But there have been years and years for that to take place.
But this is the whole question. WHO decides there's 'reasonable doubt' after the trial jury decides there's not? The leftists will never stop manufacturing 'doubt.' Mumia, Peltier, Central Park 5, etc.
The key word is ‘reasonable’ - there does need to be a standard- objective standard- not subjective- of some kind-
“””””The leftists will never stop manufacturing ‘doubt.’ Mumia, Peltier, Central Park 5, etc. “””””””””
It makes me hurl when all these libs get together and cry for someone being executed.
I remember them all wailing the night Tookie Williams sucked the gas.
They glorify those who kill unborn children and call it a choice but defend mass murderers.
Examining his DNA is worth being sure of his guilt or innocence. In fact it should be mandatory now that DNA plays such a crucial role in cases anymore.
Semen was found inside Stites, and police matched the DNA to that of Reed, who was arrested a year later. Reed’s sperm had previously been collected as part of an unrelated sexual assault investigation.
Reed initially denied to investigators that he knew Stites. But he later gave a startling explanation for why they discovered his DNA: He and Stites were having a clandestine and consensual sexual relationship, one that was taboo because he is black and Stites was white.
He added that Reed’s own past, including accusations of sexual assault, shouldn’t be discounted. Reed has denied involvement in other assault cases, and although he was accused he was never convicted in those cases, according to the Texas Tribune.
Family members of Stites have said the attention given to exonerating Reed has done a disservice to her memory.
“For too long we’ve been trying to fight for justice for Rodney, who didn’t deserve justice at all,” Stites’ sister, Debra Oliver, told KXAN when Fennell was released from prison last year. “We need justice for Stacey.”
He doesn't have a twin brother does he?
'Reasonable' is what's supposed to happen in the courtroom and in the jury room. In those venues there are rules and penalties for whoever breaks the rules. In the media and on social media there are no rules. The leftists lie incessantly and with no penalty. That's why I'm always skeptical when long after a trial is concluded people claim to be seeking 'justice.'
Are you claiming that's what has happened in this case?
nah, just making a generalization that is my right to do...
Stites looked like the typical girl next door. She was anything but. Very bad choices being engaged to a sicko bully cop while fooling around with Reed. Both men have rap sheets with similar crimes.
Didnt they find his semen in a 12 y/o girl?
Why isnt the media telling the full story of Rodney Reed?
Reeds next assault was on a 12-year-old girl, A.W.
A.W. fell asleep on a couch while home alone, and woke up to Reed pushing her face into the couch, then being blindfolded, gagged, and repeatedly struck. The full details of that incident can be read on page 8 of the Supreme court document.
The foreign DNA from A.W.s rape kit was compared to Reed; Reed was not excluded and only one in 5.5 billion people would have the same foreign DNA profile from A.W.s rape kit.
“That incident, as well as an additional four more sexual assaults which have DNA evidence pointing to Reed, are all outlined in the document above.
