Montgomery County becomes first US county to ban discrimination based on natural hairstyles
Marylands Montgomery County is the first county in the United States to pass legislation banning discrimination based upon a persons natural hairstyle.
The Montgomery County Council voted unanimously for the bill that prohibits discrimination in employment, housing, taxi service and other public accommodations. A person who is discriminated against can seek a civil penalty of up to $5,000 through the countys Office of Human Rights.
It will expand the definition of race to include natural hairstyles, like Afros, twists, Bantu knots, and protective hair styles like braids, that people of African descent wear, said Montgomery County Council member Will Jawando, who spearheaded the effort with Council President Nancy Navarro.
We have over 200,000 black and Latina women in Montgomery County, many of whom get up every day and make decisions about how they are going to present themselves to the world, said Jawando.

The bill, entitled the CROWN (Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair) Act is similar to legislation passed in July in New York and California. Similar legislation has been introduced in Wisconsin, Kentucky, New Jersey, Tennessee, Michigan and Illinois.

Yep - I finally got thin enough on top to opt for the “Telly Savalas”...
None of those hairstyles are “natural”. Workplace dress and grooming standards often have more to do with health, safety, and sanitation than hairstyle bigotry.
I suggest the next step would be to ban discrimination against “natural” fingernails. Let’s see how people like being tended to by a nurse with 3 inch gel nails.
This partly came up because recent immigrant taxi and Uber drivers were avoiding blacks, particularly those with dreadlocks. Another case involved a food worker with a full-blown Afro that couldnt comply with the hair net rule.
Personally, I think its OK. I dont really care what your hair looks like. Youre the one that has to see that in the mirror every morning. Besides, enjoy it while you got it. I had long, wavy brown hair with natural red and light brown highlights. Now, the few hairs I have left are either black or white.
Balding people with permanent hat- or bed- hair rejoice, too
No no. New law: Whereas hairless or near hairless heads are a public eyesore and deemed inappropriate for sensitive eyes: all people with less than X number (to be determined by diversity committees) of hair follicles will be required to wear a wig in any style - except those deemed inappropriate or previously banned styles.
> We didnt hire you because of your hairstyle but because youre an idiot! <
Sixty years ago: Im sorry I didnt interview better. Thank you for your time.
Today: Sez you. My lawyer thinks otherwise. I think well let a jury decide.
Eleanor has survived all these tears inspite of her Lice Cut Hair. The lice cut is popular in Africa where head lice are a problem
When I worked in IT I one day got a frantic call from a woman who couldn't seem to log on to her computer. I had put the computer out the day before and since it was for dedicated use it had a particular password which I had assigned it and which I had given to her that day, carefully spelled out. She told me she I must have written it down incorrectly because she had tried it dozens of times with no success. I immediately sat down and successfully logged on using the credentials I had given her. I then logged off and asked her to try again. It was at that point I realized what the problem was. She was wearing a set of those huge, hooked, artificial nails, which hardly made contact with the keyboard. How she managed to do her job I could never say, but I couldn't help but wonder how she managed personal hygiene.
Great story. Thanks for my morning chuckle.
LOL - brilliant!
Nappy head law. Only white skin and Christian beliefs are allowed to be discriminated against.
