The Real Reasons Republicans Lost Virginia
American Thinker ^ | 11/08/2019 | By J.B. Seabolt and William Seabolt

Following the Virginia election debacle last Tuesday, Republican voters in the Old Dominion might feel tempted to despair of dreaming about a red Virginia ever again. Many seem disposed to wait out President Trump’s term under the impression that Republicans cannot win under Trump. However, the Virginia Republican Party failed to field viable candidates, use the political resources available to them, or articulate any sort of stance on electoral issues. Democrats did not win Virginia, nor did a massive turn in national sentiment doom the Republican Party; the Virginia State GOP ruined its own chances.

Perhaps most startling, the Virginia Republican Party failed to run candidates in ten out of forty (the 1st, 2nd, 18th, 29th, 30th, 31st, 34th, 35th, 36th, and 37th), fully one-quarter of Virginia senatorial races. In contrast, the Democrats contested all races but one, the 23rd district. A party cannot win elections without candidates.

The Republican Party also failed to contest twenty-three out of one hundred delegate races (the 11th, 32nd, 35th, 36th, 37th, 38th, 45th, 46th, 47th, 48th, 53rd, 57th, 67th, 69th, 70th, 74th, 77th, 79th, 86th, 89th, 90th, 92nd, and 95th districts), again about one-fourth. While the Republican Party lost nearly a quarter of the House of Delegates seats by default, the Democrats contested all but seven races (the 1st, 3rd, 5th, 9th, 17th, 19th, and 78th districts).

It also looks like the Republicans did not contest races in certain districts with unfavorable minority majority demographics. That sort of worn-out, defeatist thinking has to stop. The Republicans ran Darrell H. “D.J.” Jordan Jr. in the 31st Delegate district and Garrison R. Coward in the 68th Delegate district. Both are great candidates and also minorities. Jordan lost by just six points (1,500 votes). Coward lost by ten points (3,900 votes). Jordan should have won

They don’t know how to fight, here in NY it’s incompetent leadership at all levels.

Virginia is a lost cause. I had previously lived there for almost 3 years. The number one reason is demographics. Democrats from all over the country move to Virginia for their first job out of college, and they live in northern Virginia to avoid the high taxes and commute from Maryland and D.C. Also, Northern Virginia looks like South Africa, Baghdad, India, and Mexico depending on the neighborhood you are in. I have never met a republican in my entire life in Virginia with the exception of a moral and ethical principled lightweight who works in the area. None of the white women in Virginia are worth dating. They are vapid, empty shells of a former American blood line. They are more likely to go to a rap music concert than vote for a republican any day of the week. Also, to be honest, this is my experience in nearly every major city I have lived in. Including Cody, Wyoming. Which is current being colonized by blacks, Mexicans, and Indians(From India). The last time I picked my little cousins up from kindergarten, they were one of a few white kids in their grade. This included the 1st grade, and Pre-K. This country is toast. I suggest you prepare accordingly. We have long past the demographic winter because Arabs and Hispanics can, and do, Identify as white. I am sad to say, there is little hope for this country because most white men are overweight betas who worship diversity and wish they were famous gangster rappers. I have two in my family. I am sure the situation is similar in other families.

To some extent, Virginia's election was litigated with funding from outside the state when the redistricting fight was going on.

Once the republicans lost redistricting, there wasn't much point in trying to win un-winnable races.

The biggest downside for the national GOP is that the capital of the United States is now completely and irreversibly flanked by socialist-run state governments.

Too many Virginians make their living via the Federal government. The bigger the govt. is the better it is for them, so they vote Democrat.

Not that complicated.

It is actually surprising that Virginia is considered a purple state instead of a blue state.

“The last time I picked my little cousins up from kindergarten, they were one of a few white kids in their grade.”

Same here in L.A. BUT They are MOSTLY white. I know conservatives who send their kids to private school and they meet these idiot white liberal parents who hate Trump yet they dont want their kids mixing with non-whites...the same demographic they hate, yet “allow” due to their idiotic NO BORDERS attitude.

The GOP threw VA under the bus. Northern VA RINOS will not play nice so they are giving the state to the Dems.

I don't see how that's possible when the Republicans didn't even run in a quarter of the races in both chambers of the statehouse.

I think I read somewhere that a number like you suggest excluded the uncontested races.

I made a slightly similar argument about the 2018 turnout, saying that the Democrats winning the popular vote in 2018 was meaningless because they were defending 23 Senate seats to the Republicans' 12, meaning they'd naturally have a higher popular vote because they had more elections.

It would seem that in Virginia, Democrats would also win the popular vote if Republicans don't even field candidates in a quarter of the races.
