Voters in the state of Washington rejected a controversial affirmative action proposal in Tuesday’s elections.

According to the latest figures from the Washington secretary of state’s office, Referendum 88, which would have reinstated the use of affirmative action in state employment, contracting and admission to public colleges and universities, was defeated 52% to 48%

With 100% of precincts reporting and 983,438 votes counted, 509,144 people voted against the referendum and 474,294 people supported it.Opposition to the measure was led by a group of Chinese immigrants, according to the Seattle Times.

Opponents said the referendum would have given the government the power to discriminate. They also criticized a commission that would have been created to oversee diversity efforts at state government agencies. Supporters said the policy is necessary to fight discrimination in universities, contracts and government jobs.

And THIS is why their ideas are rarely ever up for a vote.

RE: Who have now jumped ahead of us white guys as being in the center of the target.

What is it about this country where a large number of people want to put into law, discrimination against successful people who work hard?

RE: oops... this will be challenged in court

If the courts can overrule a referendum, what’s the point in having it in the first place?

The vote doesn’t matter. Democrats will simply impose the AA law by fiat. A tactic Washington has learned from Oregon and California.

To quote Robert Heinlein: Throughout history, poverty is the normal condition of man. Advances which permit this norm to be exceeded—here and there, now and then—are the work of an extremely small minority, frequently despised, often condemned, and almost always opposed by all right-thinking people.
Whenever this tiny minority is kept from creating, or, as sometimes happens, is driven out of a society, the people then slip back into abject poverty. This is known as ‘bad luck’.

” Democrat voters in Blue state Washington rejected a Democrat sacred cow. “

Well, a few did but this was the usual split between the Seattle-area and the rest of the state. Seattle and environs would have passed it comfortably if they weren’t bothered with the rural deplorables.

The reason for this whole thing is because Washington state voters banned racial consideration for colleges (Affirmative Action) with Initiative 200 in 1998. The overwhelmingly Democrat legislature this year passed a law to overturn that, but the people were able to take it to a referendum. It’s unlikely a court will look into it, since it’s been law of the land for over twenty years, and generally referendums and initiatives are only scrutinized if they pass.

Dodging a bullet is great news. Only 4% of the voting citizenry is standing in the breach between sanity and...California. Congratulations Eastern Washington.
