Washington (AFP) - President Donald Trump's son published on Wednesday the name of the alleged anonymous whistleblower whose complaint fired the impeachment inquiry against Trump, breaking strict conventions for protecting officials who reveal wrongdoing in government.
Amid calls by the president himself to expose the whistleblower, Donald Trump Jr. tweeted the name of a CIA analyst which has circulated online for weeks, and linked to a Breitbart news article implying the person was pro-Democrat and anti-Trump.
AFP could not independently verify the whistleblower's identity and is not publishing the name.
But the revelation by the president's son comes as the White House seeks to discredit the mounting impeachment effort in Congress against Trump, painting it as driven by politics.
"There is no Whistleblower. There is someone with an agenda against Donald Trump," the president tweeted on Monday.
Standing beside Trump at a political rally in Kentucky Monday, Republican Senator Rand Paul threatened to expose the person and demanded they testify in Congress.
"We also now know the name of the whistleblower... I say tonight to the media, do your job and print his name."
Andrew Bakaj, the whistleblower's lawyer, would not confirm or deny the reported name, but said Trump Jr. and others were endangering the person as well as the system built to protect whistleblowers.
"Identifying any name for the whistleblower will simply place that individual and their family at risk," he told AFP.
"It won't, however, relieve the president of the need to address the substantive allegations, all of which have been substantially proven to be true."

As has been repeated ad nauseum by several conservatives in the House and Senate, the Whistleblower Laws DO NOT allow a whistleblower to remain anonymous as any accused has the right to face and question their accusers.
What the Whistleblower Laws provide is protection against RETALIATION.
The flunky writer and his/her editor(s) conflate loss of anonymity with retaliation.
One doesn't have to be a lawyer to understand this. Every whistleblower knows they are not guaranteed anonymity. They know they are only guaranteed protection from retaliation while the investigation is ongoing. If the whistleblower is shown to be truthful, the protections are continued. If the whistleblower is shown to be untruthful, the protections are withdrawn.
The whistleblower is guaranteed no reprisals, not anonymity.
Be funny if he was at the original meeting of the Coup Attempt I plotters in Jan 2017.

It's astounding that even good, insightful posters such as yourself continue to express confusing, conflicting accounts of the true nature of the struggle for control over the USA.
No one on the left is conflating anything, making erroneous assumptions, or otherwise violating basic journalistic standards. Rather, they are enemy agents intentionally using their controlled media assets to spread dissent, encourage violence and otherwise utilize a wide range of propaganda tools & techniques to achieve their desired end(s).
It's as simple as the propaganda put out by Germany & Japan during WWII. Did our forebears constantly monitor and react to obvious lies and distortions directed towards Allied listeners in support of Axis war aims? No, they were laughed at. Whistleblower rules were established to allow a government worker to expose fraud, corruption and financial chicanery without losing their jobs. It was never intended to give them a mask of anonymity or invisibility.
This false WB is a Deep State lieutenant acting in the interests of the Deep State. The Deep State pretends they can keep him from being cross-examined under their murky, ad hoc version of WB rules, which the ICIG apparently thinks he's somewhat free to change without accountability.
"The identity of the whistleblower is unimportant now that we have direct testimony. But there are ways Republicans in Congress could ask questions consistent with legal protections. So the assault on the whistleblower is pure thuggery. Silence by other Republicans is complicity."
