TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) Voters in one of Arizonas most liberal cities rejected an initiative Tuesday that would have made Tucson the states only sanctuary city amid concerns that it went too far in restricting police officers.
The measure drew fierce opposition from the mayor and city council, all of them Democrats, who said the initiative risked public safety and millions of dollars the city gets from the state and federal governments.
The measure was pushed by activists who wanted to give a voice to Tucsons Latino community. They said it would have sent the message that immigrants are safe and protected in Tucson at a time when many are fearful of President Donald Trumps immigration policies.
The initiative, known as Proposition 205, would have put new restrictions on when police can inquire about immigration status or cooperate with federal law enforcement.
It explicitly aims to neuter a 2010 Arizona immigration law known as SB1070, which drew mass protests and a boycott of the state. It prohibits sanctuary cities in Arizona and requires police, when enforcing other laws, to verify the immigration status of anyone suspected of being in the country illegally. Courts threw out much of the law but upheld the requirement for officers to check immigration papers.
It will put into law that we will not, as we move forward, collaborate in the federal effort to terrorize, detain, separate and deport our community members, said Zaira Livier, executive director of the Peoples Defense Initiative, which organized the effort that became Proposition 205.
Tucsons mayor and city council members, all of them Democrats, were opposed to the measure because they worried about unintended consequences and the potential for losing millions of dollars in state and federal funding.

Don’t give up folks. There is still a ray of sunshine left in this country.
What’s Overwhelmingly?
For some reason no one wants to report the actual results
Soon one of these cities will pass a law saying police cant enforce any laws. We are getting close to anarchy.
Heh, my sister-in-law and her hubby were in Tuscon for a few years while she was in school. Very liberal, of course, since they were in a university town.
Her house was robbed twice. Of course, they just shrugged their collective shoulders and scooped up the insurance money and purchase new things.
Perhaps one of the reasons the citizens there voted down sanctuary city is that a number of them had the same experiences as my sister-in-law.
And on another note, so we can just vote to disobey laws of the country? If yes, I’m awaiting voting on whether we could outlaw various idiotic things foisted upon us by the dimbulbcrats.
RE: Whats Overwhelmingly?
This isn’t Overwhelming enough? SEE HERE:
(EXCERPT)
58,820 voters, or 71.4%, voted no on the proposal compared to just 23,562, or 29%, who voted yes.
“For some reason no one wants to report the actual results.”
Exactly what I was thinking.
I believe it went down with 70% of the vote against.
After what just happened across from Douglas AZ I’m surprised there weren’t more votes against.
Thanks....nice to see the numbers.
No on a sanctuary city proposal?
It sounds like the birth pangs of a new Third Reich! (/liberal)
Comments BUMP!
List of grievances:
1) War (especially undeclared)
2) Debt slavery https://usdebtclock.org
3) Aiding and abetting invaders who harm our citizens and are given sanctuary in our cities...
4) Allowing a stealth jihadi to murder American service members at Ft. Hood and not administer justice.
5) POS anti-American politicians

71.4% against.
SEE POST #6 above for the result of the referendum.
Some obxxx annointed judicial entity can nullify that with the stroke of a pen.
71 percent. The libs were originally writing stories leaving out the losing percentage. 28 percent. Now they are leaving out both. It was a massacre.
That's only for illegal aliens. You can rest assured that the police will enforce all laws on deplorables and bitter clingers like us.
I’m not blind....it was posted obviously as I was posting my comment, tks.
I lived in Tucson for thirteen years. I had four attempted robberies, one successful in which they stole my .357 magnum pistol, and my car was ransacked once. The police drove up screaming at me like I was the bad guy...They don’t light the streets because of a damned observatory. It is dark, dark, dark...
It is a grade A shithole. Even Rothschild, the mayor got mugged.
