Doesn’t mean it wasn’t a false flag, just makes it less probable. Either way, Beijing will exploit this.

Thanks Eleutheria5. Guess gun confiscation has its upside for advocates of dissent-hating single party state dictatorships.

Guns are a great deterrent against tyrants. But once the tyrants are there, tyranizing, and you have to use them, you got trouble, because they have more and better guns, and can crack down on you.

The American Revolutionary War was won, not by armed citizens, but by the French Navy. The armed citizens proved at Monmouth that they were a credible force, because Washington’s men were able to hold their own and almost win that battle, despite a rocky start; i.e., that they had game. But ultimately, it was the French Navy that won the war in conjunction with the armed citizens.

Similarly, the Irgun was fighting way out of its weight against the Mandatory forces. But when they showed they could disrupt the British to the point where the Mandate became unmanageable, the UN stepped in.

Moral of the story, Hong Kongians should fight for their freedom with knives, guns, whatever they have. But they should do so with an eye towards showing they have game, so that they can get help from a major power that isn’t fighting out of its weight like they are.

Who that major power might be is the question. The British signed an agreement with the PRC that the PRC is in breach of, but as Cronos has pointed out, the British upper lip is not as stiff as it once was, and they might not be up to it. But the US wants to make a deal with the PRC, and the PRC wants to make a deal with the US. So there there is leverage and possibilities.
