Ghazala Hashmi (D) unseated Virginia state Sen. Glen Sturtevant (R) on Tuesday to become the first Muslim woman elected to the state senate, according to The Associated Press.
Hashmi, a former community college professor, will represent the state’s 10th Senate District, which includes Powhatan County and parts of Chesterfield County and Richmond. She emigrated to the U.S. from India as a child and 2019 marked her first campaign for public office.
Hashmi’s campaign hit heavily on issues such as gun violence and education, and she was a supporter of Gov. Ralph Northam’s (D) universal pre-kindergarten proposals. During the campaign, she went after Sturtevant, a two-term incumbent, over his opposition to Medicaid expansion even as the Republican presented himself as an independent voice in a state where President Trump’s approvals are consistently low.
“This victory, is not mine alone. It belongs to all of you who believed that we needed to make progressive change here in Virginia, for all of you who felt that you haven’t had a voice and believed in me to be yours in the General Assembly,” Hashmi tweeted Tuesday evening.

Virginia state Del. Danica Roem (D) was reelected on Tuesday, becoming the first openly trans person to win reelection in a state legislature.
So Democrats will now control redistricting - not only for their state legislature, but also for the US House seats. The Soros machine prevails.

People vote for muslims to show how tolerant they are, not realizing it is a one way street.

I wish the GOP was allowed to control redistricting... but we're not. In NC, the courts overruled GOP redistricting and ORDERED that their lines could not be used in 2020. It seems it's unconstitutional for the GOP to redistrict...
Same thing happened to us in Virginia.
This election was run on maps drawn by a Univ. of CA-Irvine professor at the direction of a judge.
Redistricting is about the most political thing there is and sole responsibility lies with the representatives of the people. The courts thinking they have a say in this is ludicrous... and yet the GOP simply complies.
Justice Roberts has said as much, but not loud enough for lower courts to hear him.
When Democrats are in power, Democrats have the right to redistrict as they please.
