The Boy Scouts of America's chief executive took a medical leave of absence as the youth organization faces financial difficulties related to sex-abuse litigation.
The ailing official, Mike Surbaugh, has held the BSA's top post for four years.
The chairman of the BSA's executive committee, James Turley, conveyed the news of Surbaugh's departure to members of the Boy Scout's national staff in an email sent Monday. In the note, Turley referred to the BSA's ongoing "financial challenges."

Surbaugh's departure comes at a critical time for the Boy Scouts, which for years have been entangled in costly litigation with plaintiffs who said they were abused by scout leaders in their youth. Hundreds of new lawsuits may lie ahead with the recent enactment of laws in New York, New Jersey, Arizona and California making it easier for victims of long-ago abuse to seek damages.
The BSA says it's exploring "all available options" to maintain its programs and has not ruled out the possibility of declaring bankruptcy.
Seeking to relieve some of the financial pressure, the BSA announced two weeks ago that the annual membership fee for its 2.2. million youth members will rise from $33 to $60, while the fee for adult volunteers will rise from $33 to $36. The news dismayed numerous local scout leaders, who had already started registering youths for the coming year.

There was pressure from outside groups to destroy the Boy Scouts, but most of the actual damage was done by the organization's own leadership.
There is nothing left to mourn. Take your kids to another leadership organization, or start your own. My son (Eagle rank) says his two boys will never wear a BSA uniform. That is settled.

Millions of Americans attacked the Boys scouts and voted for a politician who proclaimed he would sign a bill forcing the boy scouts to accept homosexual leaders if the legislature could get a bill to his desk.
This didn’t happen just because the Boy Scout rank and file leaders made bad decisions on their own. A lot of Americans worked hard to make this happen.
Tolerating the behavior - ever - was bad.
Normalizing it was suicide.

File bankruptcy and let some group take it over to rebooting it back to the way it was. No girls! No gays! No Tillerson! No Gates! And bring back God into the organization!
The Knights of Columbus and American Legion also sponsored many troops. Both organizations have quietly ended involvement with the BSA. At one almost every Legion Post in my District had a Troop. We are down to three sponsored troops -withing 5 years there will be none left.
