Democrats unifying against Joe Kennedy Senate bid
The Hill ^ | 11 05 2019 | Alexander Bolton

Senate Democrats are nearly united in their opposition to Rep. Joe Kennedy III (D-Mass.), the scion of their party’s most fabled family, in his bid to unseat Sen. Ed Markey (D).

Kennedy, a 39-year-old graduate of Harvard Law School, is putting his political career on the line by taking on a Democratic incumbent who has been a fixture in Congress since 1976. His campaign also marks the best hope of putting a Kennedy back in the Senate or White House in the foreseeable future.

The Kennedy name has captivated Democrats going back 60 years, when John F. Kennedy ushered in the era of Camelot by winning the 1960 presidential election.

But it seems that magic is starting to wear off 10 years after the last Kennedy to hold a Senate seat, Sen. Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.), died while in office.

Senate Democrats, including those who may have been inspired by JFK when they launched their political careers, are standing by Markey, who they consider a loyal party soldier, even if he sometimes steals the spotlight or finds a way to horn in on their pet issues.

It does seem odd to go after a loyal incumbent.

I do not want to see another Kennedy succeed in politics, but I also despise professional pols like Markey who has been in office 43 years. Fortunately I don’t live in Massachusetts.

I hate political “dynasties” with a passion. As much as I love President Trump I would not back his children in politics. I want to elect people who were successful in other walks of life who get into politics and the get out.

Democrats have gone from “speaking truth to power” to seizing power and crushing anyone who gets in their way.

Wow! If Kennedy loses then I’d say we can finally declare Camelot to be dead...

Howie Carr:

If it’s Ed Markey vs. Joe Kennedy III, the Democrat Senate primary next year could be a once-in- a-lifetime political event.

For the first time in two generations, maybe more, the Kennedy in the fight would be the more intelligent of the two candidates, and it wouldn’t even be close.

At his St. Patrick’s Day breakfast, Billy Bulger used to say of then-Cong. Ed Markey: “To a battle of wits, he comes unarmed.”

Eddie Markey is a guy who schemed for 40 years to get to the Senate, and then when he finally arrived, on a fluke, in 2013, his first vote was, “Present.”

After the Super Bowl a couple of years ago, Ed Markey stood up on the floor of the Senate and congratulated “the Boston Patriots.”

Ed Markey – the man that time forgot. It looks like time just got a wake-up call from the front desk.

If it comes down to Markey vs Kennedy, I’ll vote for Kennedy.

I guess he doesn’t expect Warren’s senate seat to be open anytime soon!

Well, they USED to be the Boston Patriots. No worse than lamenting the Brooklyn Dodgers choking.

It is fitting that an empty suit like markey is being threatened by a younger, but even emptier suit from a famous family of empty suits.

The media won’t give the Kennedy name a rest. Anything that happens to anyone remotely related to a Kennedy is considered news. If the person has a last name other than Kennedy, he is introduced by something like: “Kennedy cousin Michael Skakel...”

Let it drop! They are not important because they are distantly related to J. F. Kennedy.

And it wasn’t Camelot.

No way Mr. Frosty beats a Kennedy in a Massachusetts election. Eddie needs to retire.
