Israeli Air Force chief Amikam Norkin on Wednesday said the militarys multi-tiered network of air defense systems were on alert amid a general threat of attack by Iran.
In recent weeks, the military has begun to believe that Tehran intends to eventually retaliate against Israels regular airstrikes against its forces and proxies in the region.
The Israel Defense Forces believes this could take the form of a large-scale attack involving cruise missiles and attack drones, similar to the strike on Saudi Arabias Aramco petroleum facility that was attributed to Iran.
Earlier this week, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Iran intends to attack Israel from Yemen, which may make intercepting such a strike more difficult as the IDFs intermediate and long-range air defenses are better positioned to shoot down incoming attacks from Israels north, rather than from the south.
Even as we speak, Arrow, Patriot, Davids Sling and Iron Dome batteries are on alert, Norkin said Wednesday night at a graduation ceremony for air defense officers.
The air defense chief was referring to each of the militarys air defense systems, from the Arrow and Patriot systems, which are designed to destroy incoming long-range missiles and aircraft, to the mid-range Davids Sling, and the Iron Dome system, which can shoot down short-range rockets and small drones.
The challenge of air defense has become more complicated. Joining the threat of missiles and rockets are now attack drones and cruise missiles, he said.
Unlike ballistic missiles, which usually fly through a high arc on the way to the target, cruise missiles and drones fly at low altitude, making them harder to detect and intercept.
Iran appears to have been building up its drone activities and attacks in recent months. In August, Israeli fighter jets carried out airstrikes in Syria to thwart a planned attack on Israel by Iran-backed fighters using armed drones, the IDF said at the time.
The Israeli military said its strike targeted operatives from Irans Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force as well as Shiite militias, including the Hezbollah terror group, who had been planning on sending kamikaze attack drones into Israel armed with explosives.
Israel has vowed to prevent Irans regional proxy militias from obtaining advanced weapons to use against the Jewish state and has carried out hundreds of airstrikes in Syria that it says were to prevent delivery of weapons and to stop Iranian military entrenchment in that country.

True or not, the stories only embolden Iran.

In before the "false flag!" jackasses start their braying.
Weren’t Pelosi and Schumer in Jordan a couple of weeks ago?
What kind of bears...grizzly, black or polar?
Preferable to.watching bares.
Well said. However, I don't think the Mullahs are stupid enough to try to nuke a nation with their limited capability against a nation that has many, not to mention the support of the USA.
Personally, I think it's getting close to strike Iran with strategic nukes and do away with the Mullahs. Let Israel set an example by destroying Iran like America did with Japan. Except for terrorist orgs., no country has dared to attack us since they know we will use our nukes if push comes to survival.
If Israel is nuked by Iran - They will wipe Iran off the map...
Of this I have no doubt.
Just doesn’t seemm likely. It would have to be a knockout blow.
Well...Baghdadi was emboldened, too...
When Turkey threatens to let its army drive right through the area were the US has its less than 50 soldiers, I really would see how one argues that leaving northern Syria was due to fear of Iran. Sounds like lots of convolutions necessary.
Yesterday, however, this piece was posted on FR: http://freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/3790226/posts
Note the troop reinforcements in Saudi. That is anti-Iran. Don't think POTUS is caving in to Iran. However, he knows that the US is winning the cold war, so no reason to allow it to go hot.
missiles fired at Israel fired from Yemen will be downed by Saudi Arabia
The Iranian purpose is not to damage Israel but to smoke out the reality of Saudi/Israeli cooperation
(We recently moved missile batteries into Saudi Arabia along with USAF squadrons)
I would feel very bad for western-loving Persian collateral damage, but it would end this conflict for decades. I believe it's time for rogue nations to once again learn a harsh lesson. Again, there is such a thing as smaller strategic nukes which I'm sure Israel possesses.
That said, No American boots in country! Israel has their nukes, air power, and very determined ground warriors, not to mention Mossad.
Only if you're approaching the question with logic and/or common sense. :^) You're expecting a lot from the mullahcracy, which is teetering on the brink as usual.
There are 14,000 new boots on the ground. The ground is in Saudi Arabia from whence the air defense of Israel will be made
Israel, Jordan, Syria and Iraq percolating. Bears watching.
What kind of bears...grizzly, black or polar?
