If Boris Johnson had one key promise when he stood for the Tory leadership it was that nothing would prevent him from leading Britain out of the European Union on 31 October.
It was a message that he repeated ad nauseam during the contest for the party crown and in his early days as Prime Minister, variously pledging to deliver Brexit “do or die”, “come what may” and “in all circumstances”.
He said he would rather “die in a ditch” than fail and even denounced his main leadership rival, Jeremy Hunt, for suggesting that Halloween was a “fake deadline” to achieve Brexit.
Mr Johnson’s hopes of keeping his promise received a final, fatal blow when the European Council President Donald Tusk confirmed that Britain was being granted a “flextension” until 31 October.
Guy Verhofstadt, the European Parliament’s Brexit co-ordinator, responded that he was “relieved that finally no one died in a ditch.”
The crucial question facing Tory strategists contemplating a snap election is the damage in voters’ eyes of Mr Johnson’s failure to keep the promise on which staked his reputation.
Faragists 'taken for mugs'
His official spokesman said: “What the PM is going to do is get on with delivering Brexit which the British people voted for while also ensuring that we address the domestic priorities of the country.”
But the SNP’s Pete Wishart said: “‘Die in a ditch’, ‘no ifs no buts’, ‘do or die’ … Hard Brexit Tories, [U]kippers and Faragists must feel like total and utter mugs for being taken on such a ride by Johnson this morning.”
The former Tory MP Sam Gyimah, who is now a Liberal Democrat, tweeted: “Downing Street pledged to deliver Brexit by 31 Oct, ‘using all means necessary’, and has failed in its central and only mission.
"Our courts and Parliament have shown that ‘the ends justify the means’ is no way to run a government in a democracy.”
It looks like he won't get the necessary simple majority to change the FTPA - since he got only 299 votes.
Let's see if he resigns.
This guy is definitely no Trump. Too be fair he has less executive power.
Even if he resigns, the party would go through another selection period, whittle down to the final two party members to take over for his absence.
All it does is infuriate the typical Brit on the street. The Parliament is worthless and composed of mostly just losers. You could get better representation by going over to Stonebridge Road Stadium and selecting Parliament members from those local fans for Ebbsfleet United.
I think there will be a list of people and curcumstances from him on why is that.

The sad fact about Britain is every single one of the worthless scumbags in Parliament waa duly elected by the British people. They’re ultimately responsible for the failed Brexit fiasco, just like we elected and re-elected Hussein the magic negro and gave Trump a Pelosi Marxocrat House to make his life miserable. “The people get the kind of government they deserve.”
Resigning won’t force an Election. Under the Fixed-Term Parliaments Act, Labour would have two weeks to offer an alternative Government to the Queen.
The 299 to 70 vote was for an early election under the Act, which requires 434 to vote in favor.
Now Johnson is going to try and get an election by amending the Act which only requires a simple majority.
The Scottish Nationalists and the Liberal Democrats want an Election on December 9th while the Universities are still open. Boris wants it on the 12th.

The MPs who tied Boris Johnson’s hands can only talk about a second referendum. They are trying to build momentum for it.
I am tired of hearing the Scottish whine about voting to remain. If they want to remain, break off and form your own nation, construct a border and have at it.

I think the Prime Minister of a majority government would have MORE executive power than a US President.
Say a Thatcher - with a clear majority in parliament - would combine the executive and legislative in one control.

The left doesn’t want the UK out of the EU. This is their way of cancelling the effect of the referendum that was held in the UK.
The delay is bad for the UK in many ways
1. The business exodus is only increasing in velocity - the sheer uncertainty is killing every business. I have clients who manufacture and have workforces purely in the UK, but sell all over and in the past 9 months they have been quietly shifting bits and pieces out. Now they are planning their incorporation in Amsterdam.
2. this is only pushing the independence and reunification moods in Scotland and Northern Ireland
yes, but assuming (yes, assuming :)) that he gets the same number of votes for a “end the FTPA” — that’s 299 out of 650 votes. he wouldn’t get the simple majority.

Yes, a leader is responsible if he is given the power to be a leader.
Parliament took all of Boris Johnson's power away. They voted to force him to seek an extension and they blocked his Brexit deal. They also blocked a no-Brexit from taking place.
Boris Johnson has been neutered.
3. At the end of the so called flextension the parliament will likely still be paralyzed and will not have made any forward progress while the uk exonomy and uk businesses will be saddled with the economic penalty that goes with a continuing state of uncertainty that the lack of a brexit resolution ensures.
