~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Fort Wainright, Alaska

AKwainwright2

What is now Fort Wainwright was first established in 1939 by the U.S. Army Air Corps as Ladd Field. In 1947 it was transferred to the newly established U.S. Air Force and renamed Ladd Air Force Base, serving as a cold weather station to test aircraft under arctic conditions. In 1961 it was transferred to the Army and redesignated Fort Wainwright in honor of World War II general Jonathan Wainwright.

Fort Wainwright is the northernmost post for units of the United States Army Alaska (USARAK). The United States Army Garrison Alaska and the Medical Department Activity-Alaska provide support for America's Arctic Warriors.

AKwainwright5

Fort Wainwright is adjacent to Fairbanks, the largest city in Alaska's interior. With more than 32,750 residents, a third of the Fairbanks North Star Borough population, the "Golden Heart of Alaska" is a vibrant community providing year-round activities and most amenities found in any American city.

Fort Wainwright's mission is to deploy combat ready forces to support joint military operations worldwide and serve as the Joint Force Land Component Command to support Joint Task Force Alaska. The strategic location, superior training capabilities and dynamic relationship with local civilian communities make Fort Wainwright and United States Army in Alaska a significant national asset and world-class power projection platform for military operations anywhere in the world.

A Road Not Traveled

Bible in a Year:

I will lead the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide them. Isaiah 42:16

People ask me if I have a five-year plan. How can I plan five years “down the road” on a road I’ve never traveled?

I think back to the 1960s when I was a minister to students at Stanford University. I’d been a physical education major in college and had a lot of fun, but I left no record of being a scholar. I felt wholly inadequate in my new position. Most days I wandered around the campus, a blind man groping in the darkness, asking God to show me what to do. One day a student “out of the blue” asked me to lead a Bible study in his fraternity. It was a beginning.

God doesn’t stand at a juncture and point the way: He’s a guide, not a signpost. He walks with us, leading us down paths we never envisioned. All we have to do is walk alongside Him.

The path won’t be easy; there’ll be “rough places” along the way. But God has promised that He will “turn the darkness into light” and “will not forsake” us (Isaiah 42:16). He’ll be with us all the way.

Paul said that God is “able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine” (Ephesians 3:20). We can scheme and envision, but our Lord’s imagination far transcends our plans. We must hold them loosely and see what God has in mind.

By:  David H. Roper

Reflect & Pray

In what ways has God turned your darkness into light? What have you found to be your greatest joy as you walk with Him?

Jesus, I thank You that You have plans for me far beyond my imagination. Help me follow Your lead.

It’s been rainy and miserable for two days now. Penny barely wants to go out even to do her business. But, walk we must. Then I dry her off with a nice fluffy towel.

She likes that.

Thank you. Fort Wainwright was my first duty station,1984-1986, 283rd Medivac, Lifesavers, UH-1H “Huey” helicopter ambulance, spent 2 years flying to Anchorage, Ft. Greeley, Coldfoot, and about 100 to 150 miles in and around Fairbanks. We picked up all kinds of patients, we responded to a tourist bus accident in 85 or 86, it was the biggest helicopter lift for patients that my company did while I was there. My wife and I are heading up there in April for our 25th anniversary.

Good morning, Radu.

Had a great visit with my sister from the city. Gizmo and I spent a few minutes at the park with the cold weather. He wanted to do some running. Thankfully I had him a a leash so he couldn't run off. Dogs love cold weather.

How's things in Tenn this morning?

Howdy, E.G.C. ((HUGZ))

Sounds like you had a good time yesterday with your sister. Maybe not so good at the park with Gizmo since he wanted to take off again. LOL!

Nice and quiet in TN presently, and warm too. But that will change Wed. and Thurs. when the cold front moves through. We could get our first freeze this weekend. BRRRRRRR

I take it the front has already passed through your neck o’ da woods?

Yep and it feels kind of cold out there. Had to wear my gloves out there with Giz this morning.

This is a pretty stout front so it’s no surprise gloves were needed when you went out this morning. At least the daylight temps won’t be quite as cold.

We whined about the heat all summer and soon we’ll be whining about the cold. LOL
