Trump defends keeping ‘leaker’ Schiff, Pelosi out of the loop on al-Baghdadi raid

President Trump on Monday defended his decision not to give Democratic congressional leaders advance notice of the raid that resulted in the death of ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, saying once again that he was concerned the details would leak out.

When Trump first announced al-Baghdadi's death Sunday morning, he said he decided not to tell officials, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, because he was afraid leaks could compromise the mission. Speaking to reporters Monday morning, he singled out House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff, D-Calif., as the focus of those concerns.

"The only thing is they were talking about why didn't I give the information to Adam Schiff and his committee, and the answer is because I think Adam Schiff is the biggest leaker in Washington," Trump said. "You know that, I know that, we all know that. I've watched Adam Schiff leak. He's a corrupt politician. He's a leaker like nobody has ever seen before."

Trump, meanwhile, also indicated Monday that he may release some video footage of the raid, which he described in great detail a day earlier.

"We’re thinking about it. … We may take certain parts of it and release it, yes," Trump said.

Trump went on to blast Schiff for his handling of the impeachment investigation, including when he recited an embellished version of Trump's July 25 phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, which Schiff later described as "parody."...

Thank you Mr. President for protecting the incredibly brave men who committed this attack. One of their lives is worth more than all of Congress.

I enthusiastically agree with you!

That’s a good point about Pelosi, the situation room and a photo op. I’m pretty sure that in itself ticked her off.

I disagree. It should be shown around the World what monsters these people are. The same as I'd like to see videos of late term abortions with babies being torn apart shown.

Trump had good reason. Pelosie and Shifty Schiff are traitors and cannot be trusted with the lives of Americans.

"CA politicians should stick to banning and tanning."

Good one. Pretty much encompasses the CA liberal mentality. However, you may have forgotten celebrity fanning.

What a short memory the MSM has. Remember when the ICE raids were delayed because of leaks? Leaks against national security have already happened before.

Schiff runs out of secret meetings to leak. He has no creditability on this matter.

Exactly! Leaks are treated far too lightly by politicians, they cost the country big dollars not to mention lives.

I like floating the idea that Pelosi and Schiff led to the location of Al-Bagdhadi’s compound, albeit unwittingly, when they traveled to Jordan/Syria during the cease-fire.

Jihadis won’t like that.

He should allow Schitt and Pelosi to view a highly-edited video of the raid.

but only in a secure broom closet at the WH, with no electronics and only in the presence of a WH staffer

Trump is making a mistake to engage on this issue.
Disagree. Trump needs to protect the office of the President and also currently happens to be the most effective spokesman for the R's.

The House of Representatives and its committees have ZERO operational responsibilities in this area.
You are correct, of course; but, unfortunately, the audience is not as sophisticated as we would like. How many of todays' voters are specifically aware of that point?

Pelosi and her crew along with the MSM are nonstop busy trying to convince as many voters as possible that Trump's decision to not inform them prior to the raid violated the spirit of the Constitution, or at least some well-established, entirely sensible and long-standing practice.

As to be expected, Pelosi inflames the matter by misstating facts of the event - Trump did not brief the Russians on the raid prior to the event.

IMO, Trump's style is exactly the kind of street fighting politician the times require.

You are correct and, the president provlaimed they weren’t told because Washington is full of leakers.

The implication was they are not trustworthy. That statement was the bitch slap.

Dear Adam and Nancy. You are neither of you idiots, just malicious turds. I would never tell you in advance when I am putting US troops in harm’s way, because your irresponsible fecklessness will probably cause them harm. I’m sorry if this offends or upsets you—but not really. Anything that makes it more probable that our troops accomplishes the mission and get home safely is as good as gold to me, and if keeping you out of the loop is part of that, all the better.

Yes. Trump should’ve said...well I was going to inform Nancy at that last White House meeting but she threw a tizzy and walked out to talk to the cameras before I could inform her.

It goes even further than the mistrust of an elected government representative or the entire group in congress for that matter.

“Article 1, Section 8 of the Constitution lays out the powers of Congress. It includes several enumerated powers, including the power to lay and collect taxes and tariffs for the “general welfare” of the United States, the power to borrow money, the power to regulate interstate and international commerce, the power to set naturalization laws, the power to coin and regulate money, the power to establish federal courts inferior to the Supreme Court, the power to raise and support military forces, and the power to declare war.”

No where within this does it give the congress the opportunity to either continue an offensive or go further into the already declared war and/or determine the offensive.

“Article II of the Constitution expressly designates the president as “Commander in Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the Militia of the several States, when called into the actual Service of the United States” – since 1947, this has been understood to mean all U.S. Armed Forces. As commander-in-chief, the president exercises supreme operational command over the military; which includes the power to launch, direct and supervise military operations, order or authorize the deployment of troops (in foreign countries), and form military policy with the Department of Defense and Homeland Security.”

The organization, attempt, and carrying out of military sorties by the president in Article II of the Constitution, is not within the scope of need to know for congress until the sortie needs to be paid for. In other words, the sortie that killed the leader of ISIL is the president’s and military’s business and has nothing to do with congress to make a decision on unless they wish to declare a war on the country that was involved or investigate an impropriety of the president which in this case was justified by countering the 14 attacks since early 2013 with retaliation and attempting to destroy the organization that proliferated them. The POTUS was inside Constitutional grounds for his acts and congress was outside theirs by claiming their privilege to be informed prior to an attack on a terrorist organization that has continually threatened and attacked US citizens since it’s creation in 2006. And it could be argued that it actually started with the 1983 Beirut barracks bombings in Beirut that killed 241 US citizens or the 1984 United States embassy annex bombing, same city, that killed 24 US citizens. Obviously we have been in Islamic terrorist’s cross hairs for about half a century.
