The Second Amendment Foundations (SAF) Alan Gottlieb indiciates President Donald Trump has pivoted from any consideration of gun control and is focused on mental health reforms. Gottlieb, SAFs founder and executive vice president, told Breitbart News the White House contacted him and informed him that Trump will only support mental health legislation, no gun control.
This comes after Trump initially voiced support for expanded background check legislation following mass shootings, only to scale back that support and eventually note that the U.S. already has background checks that are strong.
On August 5two days after the El Paso, Texas, shooting and one day after the Dayton, Ohio, shootingTrump called for bipartisan action for strong background checks. He referenced background checks again on August 7, then appeared to slowly shift away from that position.
On August 19, 2019, Politico reported that Trump noted we already have a lot of background checks. And on September 1, 2019, Breitbart News reported Trump saying stronger background checks would not have prevented the high profile firearm-based attacks America has witnessed over the past six or seven years.
But Trumps exact position on the gun control push was still unclear. Now Gottlieb says the White House has assured him that Trump is looking to mental health, not gun control.

wow. someone has thought to do something that would have actually stopped many of the previous spree shooters. saving lives, instead if grinding a political agenda.
that’s almost unheard of.
The feds have NO constitutional authority regarding mental health and most of the other stuff they meddle in. The are all issues for the states and local governments and authorities who are ruled by the people of those localities. We are are a Constitutional REPUBLIC, not a third-world totalitarian government.
Folks, the Constitution is the ONLY legal bulwark of freedom against the Totalitarian Federal Government.
REINSTATE THE CONSTITUTION AS THE SUPREME LAW OF THE LAND - the Freedom of the Rule of Law NOT the Totalitarian Rule of Man.
it will help a lot if he can terminate the unconstitutional anti-American ATF (at least insofar as its F part is concerned) and reassign its employees to useful jobs (like protecting our country’s border)
Ping!
We need this so much.

Really? How?
You and me and who else?
I’m going to assume that you’re just being difficult. I mean, it’s FR.
And we have no need for "gun control" but we do have a need for "mentally ill control".
Lets star with the mentally ill in Congress!
Well, it’s a start.
Gotta get Patriots pointed in the right direction. Right now, I feel like the good guys are not laser-focused on the REAL problem (the feds) and the REAL solution (the Constitution).
The USA had very few mass shootings before the days when the insane asylums were closed down and the inmates released on the streets (they can take their meds at home.) About the same time the Vagrancy laws were done away with.
I can think of two. Unruh in New Jersey, and Whitman in Austin. There might be more but those two just first come to mind.
So, what did he havexin the gun control package he sent to congress? If it was so pro second ammendment we would have heard.
So he believed in a package, we can’t read and now wants us to trust him.
What a fabulous prez, execpt his belief in gun control.
No, it's a legitimate question. What mental health legislation could have prevented any of the mass shootings much less many of them?
Institutes for the criminally insane might have helped.
After the fact perhaps. But we're talking prevention.
None. Any new legislation will be an overreach.
According to people who reverse engineer their understanding, everyone who murders was mentally ill. Of course, that isn’t really true. And, most mentally ill people don’t murder.
Looking through history, many very successful and highly functioning people are “thought” to have had some form of or prevalent symptoms of a mental illness. Yet few if any, you could likely say none, of those people committed murder.
Murder is a choice that comes along a trail of choices.
The pattern seems so abnormal to most civilized people that we want to think no sane person would think that way or make those choices. But Evil is no mental illness.
Yes. Mental health is a big problem. Half the country is psychotic.
