Philadelphia Police Department spokesman Sgt. Eric Gripp told CNN the man was shot:

 

• five times on his right side;
• two times in his left hip;
• three times in his upper chest;
• once in his right shoulder;
• once in the right side of his neck;
• three times on his left forearm;
• and once on his right forearm.

Shot with WHAT?

My guess would be a .25 caliber or a .22 short. Those are usually what you can get shot with so many times and survive. I used to have an article about a medical doctor who was attending a medical convention in San Francisco who made the mistake of taking an after midnight walk. . . And who wound up being shot nine times in the head with a .25 auto in a mugging and just thought he just had been beat up, decided it was the result of his own bad judgement, went back to his hotel room, cleaned himself up, and went to bed, and did not even bothering calling the cops to report the robbery. He only went to the ER when he had a persistent headache in the morning following the attack, thinking he might have a concussion, and on being x-rayed they found nine .25 caliber bullets in his head. None of them penetrated very far. . . But this doctor didn’t even know he’d been shot amidst all the abrasions and bruises he got in the attack beating. I kept it around to show customers in my gun shop who thought a .25 auto would be a good self-defense gun. The article would usually disabuse them of that silly notion.

The article says: “Investigators found large caliber shell casings at the scene.” Probably .45 or thereabouts, I would guess.

Sounds as if there might be very light hand loads involved if not bad powder, or even forgot the powder completely and were just firing the primers. . . Although generally that won’t even cycle the slide.

I worked in a big city ER for years and I can guarantee that this is quite “atypical”.

For sure.

First vanco patient I ever worked up was at Detroit Receiving. Guy took a .22 center forehead. Fractured his skull, but did not penetrate. Comes in a few days later with a massive wound infection. He recovered as far as I knew.
