So they got rid of the shipping container design.

If they add bus routes to and from the mall and import teens from the hoods - why, I predict it will be a great success.

Like all the other malls that did this.

They’ll come, to see it one time. Then it’s back to online shopping.

Hard to even find a mall still open around here.

“If they add bus routes to and from the mall and import teens from the hoods”

That was my first thought. The hood is taking over a mall near where I live.

What a great idea! Let's open a shopping mall, a venue that's becoming obsolete in the age of Amazon, and that's routinely being overrun by "teens" and "youths", in one of the most liberal and taxed states in the country.

Man, whoever thought about this loves to piss away their money.

There was a story on the business page of one of the mainstream media websites a few years ago about the demise of shopping malls in general. At the time of that article, this "American Dream" mall was the only traditional shopping center under development in the entire country. That pretty much tells you the whole story. I predict that it will be a financial disaster for a whole host of reasons -- but mainly because it's a complete mismatch between what has been built and what the market actually wants.

I understand they're actually CHARGING MONEY for customers to park there. What kind of clientele do they think is going to patronize a place like this?

Pay to park at a mall? Great idea.

I make it a point to avoid Malls at all costs. IF my wife tries really hard, she might get me into one once a year. Maybe.

Haven’t been to a mall since Christmas 1990.
Sears was good back then.

About the only time I go to a mall is at Christmas time to get a couple of gifts for my wife, or to go to the Apple Genius store if something is wrong with an Apple product. Because I am taller than the sizes offered in regular stores, I have always mail-ordered clothes from catalogs, so it was easy for me to get into online ordering. If I do go to stores, they are usually in shopping centers rather than full-blown malls.

The mall near me was inundated with teens. It closed and remained empty a few years before Katrina. When Katrina hit - they housed many refugees at that mall.

Oh. The. Irony.

We’ve had this problem in NJ for years. Over the years, malls like Garden State Plaza have been running straight shot bus routes from the PA in NYC as well as the bus terminal at the GWB. 15-20 minutes and you’ve just imported the Bronx to Northern NJ. Not that I am in Morris County, the problem is the illegals infesting Dover and now Randolph and Rockaway who spend their weekends at the Rockaway Mall. Amazon works very well for me. Their leftist policies not withstanding, they’re the lesser of 2 evils at this point.

High speed rail or street cars from the closest city are even better. They haul more “shoppers” faster to the stores.

I don’t know how this will work out. I think it will draw very large crowds for a long time. Whether that translates into success for the mall vendors remains to be seen. Other malls in NJ seem to be doing well in terms of patrons. Bridgewater Commons, Short Hills and Menlo Park were all packed the last time I had to go to them.

As for this becoming a hang out for gangsters and lowlifes, I doubt it. The location is really only accessible by car and it is not that close to bad areas. The troublemakers seem to like Jersey Gardens which is right next to Newark/Elizabeth. I am sure this place will have pretty robust security. It also benefits a bit from having some high end stores nearby like the Gucci Outlet in Secaucus, about 1/2 mile away.

The mall will also prove to be a challenge for those who don't want to pay for parking, as it will charge $24 to park for eight hours

Wow. Will they charge to use the restrooms as well?
