9 GOP Senators Refuse to Condemn House Impeachment
The Hill ^ | October 24, 2019

Posted on 10/25/2019 2:13:00 AM PDT by Helicondelta

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) is spearheading the resolution, which is backed by 44 GOP senators including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).

Graham, during a press conference with reporters, lashed out the House impeachment inquiry calling it a "secret proceeding" and a "rogue action" that "denies due process."

"The process in the House today I think is a danger to the future of the presidency," Graham told reporters.

He argued that under the current procedure Trump was "pretty much shut out," adding "God help future presidents."

The GOP senators not cosponsoring the resolution as of Thursday afternoon, according to a list from Graham's office, are: Sens. Mitt Romney (R-Utah), Susan Collins (R-Maine), Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska), Cory Gardner (R-Colo.), Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.), Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.), Dan Sullivan (R-Alaska) and Rob Portman (R-Ohio).

I don't think the Democrats have any illusions about the Senate actually voting to oust Trump from office. Their goal is to drag this out into the campaign season and to force Republicans to go on the record one way or the other. The goal isn't to put Pence in the Oval Office. It's to damage Trump going into next November.

I disagree mildly with your conclusions. I don't think the Democrat leadership, certainly not Pelosi, want to vote on impeachment at all. It's popular with over half the population now but that can change. I think what they want to do is drag it out, as you said, but also count on Trump and team to ignore subpoenas, refuse to appear at hearings, block documents, etc. That way they can have their cake and eat it to. They can go through the motions and have the media cover every obstacle that gets placed in front of them so they can say that they really would like to impeach Trump and are trying to finish gathering the evidence they need to put it to the House, but they are obstructed and blocked at every turn by what they'll describe as the lawless and criminal Trump administration.

......” Any vote to remove Trump could be their political deathknell”....

In other words their seats will always be their priority over the voters and the country.....

A trial is not the Dems goal, rather keeping the false “impeachment” narrative alive and fed daily via media to the voters....

As Levin said...””This entire thing is the Democrat Party in the House seizing control of the instrumentalities of the House bastardizing the impeachment clause in order to drive a trial into the general election.”

Yep. And at least some Republican officials stated that the House Benghazi investigations were all about damaging Hillary for 2016.

This is the way the game is played now.

State Constitutions come into play, as described in the Constitution. States can assuredly (even after the 17th Amendment, which can be challenged) remove a Senator— a difficult process, said process could force a resigning. Not likely with used car Mittens, will grant you. And of course the Mormon machinery in that state, raking big bucks off the affiliation. A mormon “Cuomo” of sorts.

Wouldn’t you know it would be Rob Portman. Whose side are you on, Rob? It isn’t the voters of Ohio. Time to Find another line of work.
PS I email him on a regular basis and only get prepared scripted responses. The man is Clueless.
