I think the timing is reversed. First all the plausible rivals go down in flames (one way or another) and then Hillary “jumps” in as the “centerist savior”.

My uncle was a Dem state chairman in a key state in 1960. JFK was a good friend of his. He is gone now but in 2002 he told me the Dems left him and he was now voting straight GOP. He hated Teddy.
