A majority of Americans believe the First Amendment should be rewritten and are willing to crack down on free speech, as well as the press, according to a new poll.
More than 60 percent of Americans agree on restricting speech in some way, while a slim majority, 51 percent, want to see the First Amendment rewritten to "reflect the cultural norms of today." The Campaign for Free Speech, which conducted the survey, said the results "indicate free speech is under more threat than previously believed."
"The findings are frankly extraordinary," executive director Bob Lystad told the Washington Free Beacon. "Our free speech rights and our free press rights have evolved well over 200 years, and people now seem to be rethinking them."

The problem I see...if you took a dozen of these people into a room and said we have a month to rewrite the text (45 words currently)...that about two days into this experience, they would be writing the new second amendment that was well over 3,000 words.
Then upon reflection around the 3rd week of this experience, they’d start to question if this was overdoing it. They’d whittle this down to 300 words, and then by the last day....we’d be all the way back to 45 words. They would be unable to better the simple text of what you have now, and they’d admit that.
In 1789, James Madison had spent an awful lot of time reflecting upon what was missing from the British management of the colonies, and he had spent a fair amount of time trying to undo the damage done to people in that era.
He could not have improved the text once completed: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

Wow - according to the article, the poll consisted of 1,004 people. I'm supposed to believe that 1,004 represents the majority of our 326.69 million people ?

I agree with the majority in that we need to stop PROTECTING the media with the First Amendment. The media is ABUSING that right and it’s best to just end it and let them be held accountable.

Everyone agrees that falsely yelling “fire” in a crowded theater is not protected speech.
And anyway, it doesn’t matter. We already don’t have free speech in this country.

If you ever read anything about the first 50 years of American politics there was quite a bit of political hate speech, viscous insults and personal attacks hurled around.
The only cure for bad free speech or hate speech is more free speech. That and defamation lawsuits for false accusations.
