The suicide rate among children aged 10 through 14 has nearly tripled from 2007 to 2017, while the suicide rate among older teenagers has increased by 76 percent between 2007 and 2017, new federal data show.
According to a new report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics, the suicide rate among 10 through 24-year-olds has increased 56 percent over the last decade as violent deaths (suicide and homicide) continue to be leading causes of death for that age bracket.
In 2017, suicide was the second leading cause of death for children aged 10 to 14, teenagers 15 to 19, and young adults ages 20-24.
Meanwhile, homicide ranked as the third most common cause of death for teens aged 15-19 and adults aged 20-24, and the fifth most common cause for children aged 10-14.
“After a stable period from 2000 to 2007, suicide rates for persons aged 10-24 increased from 2007 to 2017, while homicide rates increased from 2014 to 2017,” the report explains.
“The pace of increase for suicide was greater from 2013 to 2017 (7 percent annually, on average) than from 2007 to 2013 (3 percent annually).”
Although it declined from 2000 to 2007, the suicide rate for children ages 10 through 14 has nearly tripled from 2007 (0.9 deaths per 100,000 persons) to 2017 (2.5 deaths per 100,000 persons).

Social media is creating impossible ideals for kids.
They see a social media 'influencer' on youtube, facebook, twitter, instagram et. al. and they believe their lives are boring, they're ugly, they don't have millions of 'friends' (followers), et. al.
The average kid is inundated with impossible standards they know they'll never achieve.
Without ADULTS to tone down the messages of fear and talk to them about rational expections it's not unreasonable for some kids to see their future as hopeless.
Can you image what it's like for a young child coming home from school where your teacher is telling you the world is going to end because Republicans and President Trump won't do anything to stop climate change and your parents agree with your teacher?
And everyone on social media is beautiful, happy, rich, with millions of 'friends' and you're a nobody.
Agree. The combo of social media and smart phones, but not only the kids. The adults in kids’ lives are distracted by technology and kids are being ignored.
Tell kids that they are a) responsible for the demise of the planet b) Tell them they have no future c) give them a device upon which they can take all their anger and hate out on each other. What the hell did we expect to happen?
Regardless what people tell you about pot being harmless they're wrong.
Pot changes people for the worse. Once they start smoking pot the only joy they can experience is getting high.
If you've ever been around pot smokers you'll quickly learn everything they do for pleasure always involves getting high.
Without pot, they experience no joy.

Social media has really changed society, especially for the younger folks. There is essentially zero morals online. Add confusion of what bathroom to use and the devaluation of life and God and this is what you get.
These poor kids need to know that it is not over. They have options, period.
