Ohio planners will move full speed ahead on a proposed hyperloop system that would carry passengers between Pittsburgh and Chicago in about 58 minutes for a one-way cost of about $93.
But the full system, known as Mid-West Connect, probably wouldn’t be finished until about 2050.
Thea Walsh, director of transportation and funding for the Columbus, Ohio-based Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission, said this week the agency is putting the finishing touches on feasibility and environmental impact studies but has concluded it should pursue the hyperloop system. The system being developed by Virgin Hyperloop One would move passengers and freight in pods through low-pressure tubes at speeds of 500 miles per hour.
The agency has begun briefing Ohio communities that helped to pay for the studies before they are released in case local officials want changes or more information to be included. Ms. Walsh said the agency has concluded it should pursue a hyperloop system instead of expanded rail service, although rail service would be available as a fallback if the hyperloop technology proves unsuccessful or isn’t certified by the federal government.
“I feel like there’s a real, common-sense answer,” Ms.Walsh said. “We have looked at both of them. If a better technology proves to be faster and cheaper, why would we choose to pursue rail? If hyperloop lives up to its expectations, that’s the way to go.
“If not, then why would we abandon rail? It would still be there.”

the hundreds of billions of dollars it would take to build this science fiction nonsense would pay for airline tickets for everyone for a hundred years that would ride this thing if it were ever built ...
and of course, the REAL problem with all such mass transit systems is the cost of a person’s local transportation on both ends, which would be WAY more expensive than the inter-city ticket price ...

Before this project would be deemed feasible, they will have to come up with a reason someone would want to go to Chicago or Pittsburgh.

The transcontinental railroad only took 6 years to build and they did it primarily with hand tools and some explosives. How the hell does it take 30 years with modern construction techniques except because of union labor?
Politicians and their benefactors taking kickbacks, too. Look how many years and billions it took for that ridiculous “Big Dig” project in Boston. So much corruption that drives prices and completion time through the roof.
Most of the time and cost will be in figuring out how to design an inclusive bathroom within each car of the hyper loop.
The Hyperloop project is a bit like the Moon program in that physics says it is possible but it will still take many years and lots of cash to develop the technology and build the equipment and line. In contrast, the transcontinental railroad line was only a large building project that used proven materials and technology already in production.
Other than taxing the “tube” what benefit does Ohio derive? A 500mph passenger container, vehicle, cork? I don’t know but whatever it is, will not be stopping in Ohio if the stated goal is Pittsburgh (depopulating) to Chicago (depopulating).
I just don’t see the upside for Ohio other than rent-seeking.
So it will be completed 19 years after global warming destroyed the planet?
